Chapter 8 - Bloodlines and Bargains

The underground wine cellar beneath the Moretti mansion was a cold, vaulted chamber constructed of antique brick and iron racks containing thousands of rare vintages.

It was also where the family handled its most private disputes.

Dante stood near the central oak tasting table, his navy jacket gone, his forehead shining with a thin sheen of nervous sweat. Gina sat on a wooden stool nearby, nervously tapping her red fingernails against her leather binder.

Lorenzo stood at the head of the table, flanked by Marco and two senior guards.

I stood near the arched stone doorway, staying in the shadows as Lorenzo had instructed.

"What is this about, Lorenzo?" Dante demanded, trying to project arrogance, though his voice shook slightly. "Why did Marco drag me down here at seven o'clock at night?"

Lorenzo didn't answer right away. He walked over to one of the iron racks, selected a bottle of 1996 Barolo, and set it flat on the wooden table.

"Senator Vane met with Sophie today," Lorenzo said smoothly.

Dante’s eyes flicked toward me in the doorway for a fraction of a second—a tiny, involuntary twitch that didn't escape anyone in the room.

"So?" Dante scoffed. "The man is desperate. He’s trying to intimidate our staff."

"He didn't try to intimidate her," Lorenzo corrected, pulling a small silver flash drive from his pocket and dropping it onto the table beside the wine bottle. "He offered her a deal. He said the federal grand jury has a six-hundred-page indictment ready. And he knew the exact bank account numbers for our shipping fronts in Panama—numbers that only three people in this room possess."

Gina’s head snapped toward Dante, her eyes widening in sudden, horrified realization. "Dante... what did you do?"

"I didn't do anything!" Dante yelled, his face turning red. "Lorenzo, you’re listening to a maid over your own brother?!"

Lorenzo reached out, taking the silver flash drive, and tossed it to Gina.

"That drive contains the digital audit from our internal server in River North," Lorenzo said calmly. "Marco intercepted a signal from Dante’s encrypted phone two nights ago. He was communicating directly with an Assistant United States Attorney named Miller."

Gina plugged the drive into her tablet. Her face went completely white as line after line of financial data and chat logs appeared on the glowing screen.

"My God, Dante..." Gina whispered, backing her stool away from him as if he had a contagious disease. "You gave them the bill of lading for Wharf 4. You gave them the land deeds for the Oak Park estate..."

Dante backed away until his shoulders struck the iron wine rack, bottles clinking together loudly in the quiet chamber.

"They were going to take everything anyway!" Dante screamed, his composure completely shattering into frantic panic. "Vane told me the federal task force was raiding us by the end of the month! Lorenzo was doing nothing! He was spending all his time sitting in the sunroom with a senile old woman while the empire collapsed around us!"

Dante pointed a shaking finger at Lorenzo.

"I made a deal to save myself! They promised me immunity! They promised me control of the legitimate real estate assets in Florida if I turned over the criminal ledger! You were going to sink us all, Lorenzo! You were weak!"

The room went dead silent.

Lorenzo walked slowly around the oak table, stopping three feet from his younger brother.

He didn't strike him. He didn't draw a gun. He simply stood over him, looking down at Dante with a cold, devastating pity that hurt far worse than any physical blow.

"I took a knife for you when you were nineteen, Dante," Lorenzo whispered, his voice trembling with a rare, painful emotion. "I built this empire so you could wear custom suits and go to law school instead of bleeding in the gutters like our father did. And you sold your own mother's home to save your skin."

"Lorenzo... please..." Dante stammered, tears of terror finally springing to his eyes as he realized the depth of his mistake. "I’m your brother... blood is blood..."

"Blood means nothing if there is no loyalty behind it," Lorenzo said softly.

He turned his head toward Marco.

"Take his keys. Take his phone. Strip him of his accounts," Lorenzo commanded. "Place him on a private transport to our compound in northern Wisconsin. He will stay there under twenty-four-hour guard. He will never return to Chicago. He will never see our mother again."

"No! Lorenzo! Please! Don't lock me away!" Dante shrieked as Marco and two guards seized his arms, dragging his flailing body toward the heavy iron exit door. "LORENZO!"

The heavy door slammed shut, cutting off Dante’s screams instantly.

Gina sat frozen on her stool, her hands shaking as she closed her tablet. "What about the grand jury, Lorenzo? If Dante gave them those ledgers, the federal prosecutors have enough to issue arrest warrants by tomorrow morning."

Lorenzo looked at Gina, then turned his eyes toward me standing in the shadow of the doorway.

May you like

A slow, dangerous, calculated smile touched his dark lips for the first time.

"Let them issue the warrants," Lorenzo said quietly. "Because tomorrow morning, Senator Vane and the United States Attorney are going to find out that the ledgers Dante gave them... were completely fake."
