Chapter 6 - Secrets and Sanctuary

The sub-level bunker was a stark, windowless room reinforced with three feet of reinforced concrete and equipped with independent air filtration and emergency communications arrays.
When the elevator doors slid open, Misha came running toward me with tears streaming down his face, throwing his arms around my waist.
“Lily! Are the bad men here?!” he sobbed.
“Shh, sweetie, look at me,” I knelt down, wiping his tears away while my own heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. “Your father is handling it. We are safe down here. I promise.”
We sat together on a leather cot in the corner of the bunker for what felt like agonizing hours. The muted thuds of explosions and gunfire vibrated faintly through the concrete ceiling above us. Every muffled sound felt like a death sentence.
I prayed harder than I had ever prayed in my life—not just for my own survival, but for the man upstairs who had risked everything to keep us safe.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the heavy steel security door of the bunker clicked.
The hydraulic seal released with a hiss.
The door swung open.
Mikhail stood in the doorway.
His charcoal suit was torn at the shoulder, stained with soot and dark splatters of blood that weren't his. A thin laceration bled across his left cheekbone, and he held an assault rifle loosely in one hand. But he was standing. He was breathing.
Misha let out a joyous cry and ran straight into his father’s arms.
Mikhail dropped to one knee, crushing his son against his chest, burying his face in the boy’s hair as a ragged breath escaped his lips.
When he finally looked up, his gray eyes found me across the room. He stood slowly, walking over until he stood right in front of me. Without a word, he reached out, pulled me into his free arm, and held both of us against his chest so tightly I could feel the violent, frantic pounding of his heart.
“It’s over,” Mikhail whispered against my hair, his voice rough and strained. “The perimeter is secure. The Morosoff strike team has been eliminated.”
“Are you okay?” I asked, my hands trembling as I touched the cut on his cheek.
“I am now,” he murmured, capturing my hand in his and pressing a fierce, lingering kiss to my knuckles.
Two hours later, the estate was eerily quiet again. Federal sweep teams and local emergency cleanup crews hired by Volkov Enterprises had cleared away the wreckage from the front gates.
Sitting in the master study while a private medic stitched the cut on Mikhail’s cheek, the gravity of what had happened finally settled over me.
“They found us here, Mikhail,” I said quietly, staring out the reinforced window at the dark lake. “Even behind your walls, even with your guards. They tracked us because of me. Because I stayed.”
Mikhail stopped the medic with a wave of his hand, dismissed him from the room, and stood up. He walked over to me, stopping just inches away.
“They tracked us because Viktor Vance leaked our operational protocols to the Morosoffs,” Mikhail said, his voice dropping into a lethal, glacial whisper.
I gasped. “Viktor? Your general counsel? Your most trusted advisor?”
“Not anymore,” Mikhail’s eyes flashed with dark, unforgiving fury. “My intelligence unit intercepted an encrypted financial wire transferring five million dollars from a Swiss account to Viktor’s offshore holdings this evening. He sold us out for a payday from the Morosoffs.”

“Where is he now?”
“In the basement interrogation cell,” Mikhail said simply. “And tonight... we end this war once and for all.”
