Chapter 4 - The Backstage Inquest

“You can’t do this,” Eleanor whispered, her aristocratic poise completely shattered. Tears of absolute rage and terror finally spilled over her mascara, ruining her flawless makeup. She looked around the room, desperately seeking an ally, but Alejandro Morales just stared at her with cold, professional detachment, and Lawrence Carter looked away in deep, burning shame.
“I’m not doing anything, Mrs. Davenport,” Maya replied, her tone chillingly calm. “I’m just letting the music finish playing.”
Before Eleanor could lunge toward the table to grab the notebook, the door to the VIP lounge burst open. Flashlights flared, and a swarm of journalists, camera crews, and police officers—tipped off by Alejandro’s emergency legal filings—poured into the room.
“Mrs. Davenport, is it true that your late husband’s musical catalog was stolen from composer Clara Vance?” shouted a reporter from the Los Angeles Times, shoving a microphone toward her face.
“Mrs. Davenport, police have received formal filings regarding corporate fraud tied to your charity foundations! Do you have a comment?” another voice yelled.
The flashing lights transformed the private lounge into a surreal nightmare for Eleanor. She raised her hands to shield her face, screaming in frustration as camera shutters clicked incessantly, capturing every single second of her absolute downfall.
Lawrence stepped forward, standing beside Maya under the glare of the cameras. He looked directly into the primary news lens, his voice ringing with absolute clarity and remorse.
“Ten years ago, I was a coward,” Lawrence announced to the assembled press. “I knew the truth. I knew that Clara Vance was the true genius behind the Davenport catalog, and I stayed silent to protect my own career and contracts. Tonight, that silence ends. I am stepping down as guest of honor, resigning from the foundation board, and dedicating the rest of my life to restoring Clara Vance’s legacy to her daughter.”
Maya looked up at Lawrence, seeing the genuine remorse in his eyes. A tiny fraction of the heavy weight that had crushed her chest for years finally began to lift.
Alejandro Morales stepped past the scrambling reporters, holding out a digital tablet displaying an official warrant.

“Eleanor Davenport, you are being formally detained for questioning regarding grand larceny, copyright fraud, and financial embezzlement tied to multiple non-profit organizations,” Alejandro stated coldly, his voice echoing over the shutter clicks.
Two police officers moved in, gently placing handcuffs around Eleanor’s diamond-laden wrists. As she was dragged out of the room, screaming obscenities and hurling desperate threats at the reporters, the door closed behind her, sealing the end of an era built on lies.
