Chapter 4 - The Citadel on Beacon Hill

The Beacon Hill estate was less of a home and more of a nineteenth-century fortress wrapped in modern security technology. High stone walls, iron gates wrought with intricate ivy patterns, and discreet security cameras protected a sprawling gothic-revival mansion that overlooked the gray, churning waters of Boston Harbor.

When the armored black SUV pulled through the gates, Lena was already pacing the length of the plush leather interior. Beside her sat seven-year-old Maya, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit, wide-eyed and marveling at the marble fountains and manicured gardens flashing past.

"Mommy, is this a castle?" Maya whispered, pressing her nose against the tinted window. "Does a prince live here?"

"Something like that, sweetheart," Lena murmured, her stomach tied in nervous knots as she looked at Dante, who sat across from them in absolute, statuesque silence.

The vehicle glided to a stop beneath a grand stone portico. Before Dante could even reach for the door handle, Marco was outside, opening it with crisp, military precision.

As Lena stepped out onto the cobblestone courtyard, she saw someone waiting on the grand front steps.

Elena Moretti.

The elderly woman was seated in her motorized wheelchair, draped in a cashmere shawl, her silver hair catching the amber glow of the entryway lanterns. Standing beside her was Mrs. Gable, their bewildered elderly neighbor from down the street, who was currently holding a cup of hot tea and looking around as if she had just landed on Mars.

"Mommy!" Maya shouted, breaking free and running up the steps toward the elderly woman.

Lena’s heart leaped into her throat. "Maya, wait—"

"Let her go," Dante said gently, his hand catching Lena’s elbow to steady her.

Maya ran straight up to Elena Moretti’s wheelchair. Instead of being afraid, the seven-year-old stopped, tilted her head, and looked up at the fierce, regal woman with wide, innocent eyes.

"Hello," Maya said politely. "I'm Maya. Are you the queen of this castle?"

Elena Moretti’s stern, weathered face cracked open into a breathtaking, warm smile. The fierce matriarch of the Moretti syndicate chuckled, reaching out with a wrinkled, diamond-ringed hand to touch Maya’s dark curls.

"Not a queen, little one," Elena said, her voice rich and melodic. "Just an old woman who was waiting for someone brave to come visit her."

Lena stood at the bottom of the steps, watching the scene unfold with a lump in her throat. Dante walked up beside her, his shoulder brushing hers.

"My mother hasn't smiled like that in ten years," Dante said quietly, his dark eyes fixed on Maya and Elena. "Since my father passed away, this house has been a tomb of ghosts and business ledgers. You brought life back into it, Lena, before you even crossed the threshold."

"I just wanted to help her," Lena whispered, turning her face away to hide the sudden sting of tears. "I didn't ask for any of this, Dante. I’m just a waitress from Southie. I don't belong in a fortress."

"You belong wherever I decide you are safe," Dante replied, his voice carrying an absolute, terrifying weight of finality. He turned to face her fully, his hand reaching out to gently cup her cheek, his thumb brushing away a stray tear. "And right now, that is here. With me."

Before Lena could answer, the serene atmosphere of the courtyard was shattered.

From the shadows of the outer gates, a deafening crack echoed through the crisp night air.

Gunfire.

A bullet sparked off the stone balustrade inches from Elena’s wheelchair, shattering a decorative urn into a thousand ceramic pieces.

Chaos erupted in a single heartbeat.

"Ambush! Perimeter breach!" Marco roared, drawing his weapon and lunging forward to throw his body in front of Elena Moretti’s wheelchair.

Four armed enforcers materialized from the landscaping, their submachine guns raised, returning fire toward the tree line beyond the iron gates.

Dante didn't flinch. He didn't blink.

In a fraction of a second, his protective instincts overrode everything else. He grabbed Lena by the waist, throwing her down behind the heavy stone pillar of the portico while using his own massive body to shield her completely from the line of fire.

"Stay down!" Dante snarled, his voice dark and dripping with venomous rage.

Inside the courtyard, Maya screamed, and Mrs. Gable dropped her teacup, shattering porcelain across the stone. Elena Moretti, showing nerves of steel, remained calm, gripping her wheelchair's armrests as Marco pushed her swiftly toward the heavy oak armored doors of the mansion.

Dante slowly rose from the ground, his face twisted into the mask of a merciless god of war. He reached inside his suit jacket, pulling out a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol, racking the slide with a cold, metallic snap.

"Boss, it's the O'Neill crew," Marco shouted over the sound of echoing gunfire. "They breached the east perimeter wall with a truck!"

May you like

Dante didn't look back at Lena, but his voice echoed with a promise of absolute annihilation.

"Lock down the estate," Dante growled, stepping out into the open courtyard, the rain beginning to mix with the smell of cordite and blood. "Don't leave a single one of them alive."
