Chapter 5 - Uncovering the Inheritance

The hours following Lily’s removal were a blur of cold rain, sterile police station corridors, and suffocating silence.

By 4:00 AM, Mark and Sarah were sitting in the fluorescent-lit lobby of the County Family Court building, waiting for the emergency docket to open at dawn.

Sarah sat huddled in a borrowed canvas jacket, her eyes swollen and red, her fingers clutching Lily's small pink stuffed bunny that Mark had managed to grab from her bed before the CPS vehicle drove away.

Mark was on his feet, pacing the length of the marble hallway like a caged tiger. He had spent the last three hours on his phone, calling every legal contact he knew, demanding emergency consultations.

A woman in a sharp navy suit walked briskly down the hallway toward them, holding a thick leather folder. Her dark hair was tied back in a neat bun, and her sharp blue eyes radiated intense focus.

"Mark Miller?" she asked.

Mark stopped pacing instantly. "Amanda?"

Amanda Croft was one of the top family law litigators in the state—and a former college classmate of Mark's who owed him a massive debt after he helped her clear her name in a university compliance scandal a decade ago.

"I got your message at three in the morning," Amanda said, skipping all pleasantries as she opened her folder on a wooden bench. "I pulled the emergency CPS filings from the magistrate's digital portal. Mark, this isn't a standard custody dispute. This is a surgical hit."

Sarah stood up, her voice desperate. "Can we get her back today? The judge has to see that Eleanor's evidence is fake!"

Amanda looked at Sarah with deep sympathy, but her expression remained grimly realistic. "It’s not that simple, Sarah. The paperwork filed by Inspector Vance and Dr. Harrison is airtight on paper. They filed a Title 9 Emergency Protective Order alleging severe maternal abuse and paternal enabling. Because Eleanor is the maternal grandmother—sorry, paternal grandmother—with significant financial resources and no criminal record, the duty judge granted her temporary kinship custody pending a formal hearing in seventy-two hours."

"Seventy-two hours?!" Sarah cried out, covering her face. "Our baby is in that house with her right now! The woman who struck her!"

"Why?" Mark asked, his tone dropping into a dangerous, low register. "Why is my mother doing this, Amanda? She’s hated that Sarah wouldn't let her control our lives, but to launch a full-scale legal war to take Lily? It doesn't make sense. It’s too risky for her."

Amanda looked up from her files, pulling out a faded document stamped with a silver notary seal from six years ago.

"I spent the last hour running a search on the Miller Family Estate trusts," Amanda revealed quietly. "Did your father leave a secondary will before he passed away, Mark?"

Mark frowned. "No. My father died seven years ago. Everything went to Eleanor as his sole surviving spouse. That’s why she has millions while Sarah and I live on my salary as a structural engineer."

"That's what Eleanor told you," Amanda said flatly. She slid a document across the bench. "Your father, Arthur Miller, didn't leave everything to Eleanor. He established an irrevocable educational and life trust worth 4.5 million dollars, designated entirely for his first grandchild—Lily."

Sarah gasped. Mark stared at the paper as if it were written in a foreign language.

"4.5 million?" Mark breathed.

"Yes," Amanda explained, pointing at a highlighted clause near the bottom of the page. "The terms of Arthur's trust dictate that the funds remain untouchable until Lily turns twenty-five—unless the primary legal guardian demonstrates that the child requires specialized, full-time private residential care due to severe developmental or psychological trauma. In that event, the court-appointed legal guardian receives an annual management stipend of three hundred thousand dollars directly from the trust principal."

The room went completely still.

The horror of the truth settled over Mark like a suffocating blanket.

Eleanor didn't just want control. She didn't just want to punish Sarah for standing up to her.

She needed Lily.

She needed to prove that Lily was "psychologically damaged" and that Sarah was an "unfit mother" so she could assume sole legal guardianship, declare Lily traumatized, and unlock three hundred thousand dollars a year from Arthur’s trust to fund her lavish lifestyle, which was rapidly collapsing under hidden debts.

Mark dropped to his knees in front of the bench, his hands shaking violently as he read his father's signature on the trust document.

"She didn't just hit Lily yesterday," Mark whispered, a terrifying realization dawning upon him. "She was trying to create marks. She was trying to manufacture evidence of abuse so she could present it to Dr. Harrison."

Sarah dropped beside Mark, wrapping her arms around his shoulder, her tears falling onto the legal paper. "She's using our baby as a bank account."

Mark slowly stood up. The grief and panic that had filled his face for the last six hours vanished entirely. In its place was a cold, absolute, deadly clarity.

He looked at Amanda Croft.

"How do we destroy her?" Mark asked.
