Chapter 4 - Financial Strangles

By the following afternoon, news of Caleb’s arrest had sent shockwaves through our social circle, but the real war was just beginning.

I was transferred back to a private room on the orthopedic floor. My legs remained trapped in heavy plaster, but my spirit was changing. The fear that had kept me captive for eleven years was slowly burning away, replaced by an icy, protective fury.

At 2:00 p.m., my door opened, and a woman carrying a sleek leather briefcase walked in. She had sharp blonde hair cut into an asymmetrical bob, piercing blue eyes, and wore an immaculate grey pantsuit.

"Rebecca Walker?" she asked.

"Yes?"

"My name is Elena Vance," she said, stepping inside and extending a hand. "I’m a senior partner at Vance & Sterling Family Law. Your nurse, Sarah, reached out to my firm last night. She told me what happened."

"I don't have any money to hire a lawyer, Ms. Vance," I said honestly, looking down at my bandaged hands. "Caleb controls all of our bank accounts. My name isn't even on his firm's payroll, even though I managed his personal tax filings for a decade."

Elena smiled—a sharp, confident smile that immediately made me feel safer.

"I take domestic abuse cases pro bono when I see a courageous survivor standing her ground," Elena said, sitting down in the armchair beside my bed. "And besides, once I finish with your husband, he’s going to be paying every cent of my legal fees."

She pulled out a thick stack of court documents.

"Here’s where we stand," Elena explained. "Caleb posted his fifty-thousand-dollar bail three hours ago using a bail bondsman. He is currently out of jail."

A cold thrill of dread shot through me. "He’s free?"

"He’s free under strict conditions," Elena corrected. "An emergency temporary restraining order has been issued. He cannot come within five hundred feet of you, this hospital, or your daughter. However, he has already begun his financial retaliation."

She handed me a printed notification from my primary bank.

"At 8:30 this morning, thirty minutes after he was released, Caleb wiped out our joint checking and savings accounts," I read aloud, my eyes skimming the paper. "He transferred one hundred and forty-two thousand dollars into an offshore corporate trust."

"He also canceled your health insurance policy," Elena added. "And he suspended your cell phone line."

"He’s trying to starve me out," I whispered. "He thinks if I can't pay the hospital, if I can't pay a lawyer, I’ll be forced to drop the criminal charges and crawl back to him."

"That’s his strategy," Elena agreed. "He’s a bully who relies on financial dominance. But he forgot one very important detail, Rebecca."

"What’s that?"

"You were an accountant before you married him," Elena said, her eyes glittering. "You know where every single asset is hidden. You know his corporate structures, his tax loopholes, and his hidden offshore filings."

I blinked, the fog in my mind clearing entirely.

She was right. For eleven years, Caleb had treated me like a simple housewife, forcing me to organize his receipts, balance his business ledgers, and file his complicated tax returns from our kitchen table because he was too cheap to hire an outside CPA. He thought I was just following his instructions blindly.

He didn't realize that I had memorized every account number, every shell company, and every hidden asset he had created to hide money from his law firm partners.

"He has a secret account with Credit Suisse," I said, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across my face. "Registered under 'Walker Management LLC'. It holds over eight hundred thousand dollars in undeclared real estate capital."

Elena pulled out a notepad, her pen hovering over the paper. "Tell me everything, Rebecca. Account numbers, routing codes, bank locations."

"Give me a pen," I said, reaching out my hand. "I’m going to ruin him."
