Giselle was stronger than she looked, but the trauma ran deep. One evening, as the snow outside continued to fall, she finally told me the full truth.
"They didn't just throw me out, Elias," she whispered, her hands clutching a mug of tea. "They threatened to take Hazel. They told me that if I didn't sign the voluntary relinquishment of my parental rights, they would make sure you never came home. They told me you had already signed the papers to divorce me—that you had moved on, and that I was just a liability."
The fury that surged through me was cold, surgical. I sat beside her, taking her hand. My mother hadn't just been cruel; she had been calculating, weaponizing my deployment to gaslight the woman I loved.
"They thought they could use your love for me against you," I said, my voice steady. "But they underestimated one thing. They thought that because I was away, I was absent. They didn't realize that everything I did—every mission, every sleepless night—was to ensure that when I came home, I would have the power to protect you."
