Chapter 3 - The Web of Deception

I knew I couldn't keep living in that house, but I also knew I couldn't just leave without a plan. If I alerted Ryan, he would only retreat further into his deception. I decided to take Emma to my mother’s house in the countryside under the guise of a weekend visit. Ryan, ever the master manipulator, played the hurt husband to perfection. "Is this about the stress, honey? I know it’s been hard for Emma to get used to a new father." His voice was a velvet cage, wrapping around me with false concern. When I told him we needed space, he didn't fight me; he simply smiled—a smile that didn't reach his eyes—and said, "Of course. Whatever my girls need."
At my mother’s house, Emma finally started to speak, though in riddles that terrified me more than her silence. "The water knows, Mommy. It remembers the man who was here before the new Daddy." She spoke of "the man in the pipes," a figure that haunted her bath times, a shadow that didn't leave tracks and didn't leave a reflection in the mirror. I began to suspect that Ryan was using some kind of psychological conditioning, perhaps even something chemical.

I secretly took hair and nail samples from Emma and sent them to a private lab I found through a friend. The results came back three days later: the presence of high concentrations of a synthetic sedative and a potent hallucinogenic agent that mimicked the feeling of drowning.
I was livid. I was a mother protecting her cub, and the realization of what he had been doing to her mind was fuel for a fire I had never known. I hired a private investigator, but not just any investigator—a man who specialized in high-stakes corporate espionage, someone who knew how to dig into the dark web of deleted identities. What he found made me want to collapse. Ryan hadn't just been a kind stranger; he was a man with four previous wives, all of whom had died under "mysterious" circumstances—drowning, slipping in the shower, accidental overdose. He was a serial predator who targeted widows, weaving himself into their lives before systematically destroying their children. I sat on my mother’s porch, the evidence files spread out before me, and realized that I was looking at the blueprint of a monster who had been practicing this dance of death for a lifetime.
