Chapter 4 - The Currency of Kindness

The test intensified as the night deepened. The mall began to demand a toll from everyone trapped inside. To move from one wing to the next, one had to perform an act of genuine, selfless sacrifice. A store owner had to give away her best inventory to a struggling mother. A group of teenagers had to surrender their expensive phones to help an elderly man call his family.

Ethan was the first to offer his own coat to a woman shivering in the central plaza. It was his only barrier against the plummeting temperatures of the mall’s artificial winter. He didn't think twice. When he gave it away, he didn't feel the cold; he felt a warmth radiating from within.

Vane, meanwhile, tried to buy his way out. He offered millions from his digital accounts, but the mall rejected the transactions. The registers stayed dead. The credit cards turned to ash in the readers. He was stripped of his only weapon, and for the first time in his life, he was equal to the person he had humiliated in the toy store.

"Learn," Sterling commanded.

Ethan took Vane aside, not out of pity, but out of necessity. He showed him how to carry a stranger's groceries, how to share a sandwich, how to offer a genuine apology. Vane’s hands, accustomed to signing checks, shook as he struggled with the simplest gestures of humility. The transformation was agonizing, but it was real. He was learning that being human required a currency he had spent his whole life avoiding.

I saw the change in the air. The oppressive chill began to lift, replaced by the faint, comforting scent of cinnamon coffee—the smell of the home Ethan had shared with Clare.
