Chapter 8 - The Golden Child's Collapse

With my parents facing impending criminal prosecution and an eviction clock ticking down, the pressure shifted entirely onto my older brother, Mark.

For thirty-six years, Mark had operated as the family royalty. He drove luxury sports cars he couldn't afford, wore custom-tailored suits, and treated me like a second-class citizen during family dinners. He was the "brilliant business executive," while I was just the "dependable accountant."

What my parents had kept secret from the rest of the world was that Mark’s luxurious lifestyle was a total illusion. His various "consulting firms" were constantly failing, and he was perpetually months away from personal bankruptcy. The money my parents had systematically extracted from me over the last decade had been quietly funneled straight into Mark’s bank accounts to pay off his credit cards, his children's private school tuition, and his car leases.

Now, with my financial faucet turned off, Mark’s delicate house of cards was collapsing in real-time.

On Tuesday afternoon, I was sitting in my private office at the firm when my desk phone rang. It was the main reception desk downstairs.

"Ms. Catherine, there is a gentleman named Mark in the lobby demanding to see you," the receptionist said, her voice strained. "He’s being very loud and refusing to leave."

"Send security up with him," I said calmly. "And have two guards wait outside my door."

Two minutes later, Mark burst into my office. His executive posture was gone. His eyes were bloodshot, his designer shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and his hands were shaking violently.

"Catherine! We need to fix this right now!" Mark roared, slamming his palm onto my mahogany desk. "Are you proud of yourself?! Mom is taking blood pressure medication every two hours! Dad can barely walk from the stress! They are facing prison time, Catherine! Prison time!"

I didn't flinch. I sat quietly in my chair, looking up at him with cold detachment. "You have thirty seconds to state your business, Mark, before security escorts you out of the building."

"They don't have money for a private criminal defense attorney!" Mark yelled, waving his arms hysterically. "The lawyers want a $25,000 retainer up front just to take the case! Where are they supposed to get $25,000?! They don't have it!"

"Then they can use a public defender," I replied flatly. "That is what the legal system provides for people who spend all their money on luxury vacations they can't afford."

"You have to pay for the lawyer, Catherine!" Mark pleaded, his aggressive tone suddenly shifting into a desperate, pathetic whine. "You have the money! You’re a senior partner here! If they go to prison, it will ruin my reputation! My clients will find out! My wife’s family will find out!"

"Ah," I smiled thinly. "There it is. You don't care about Mom and Dad. You care about your reputation."

"I am your brother!" Mark screamed, leaning over the desk. "You owe this family! You owe me!"

"I owe you nothing, Mark," I said, pulling open my top desk drawer and sliding out a thick stack of bank transfer records. "For the past seven years, Mom and Dad took over $80,000 of the money I gave them and wired it directly into your personal checking account. I have the bank routing logs right here."

Mark went dead silent. The color completely drained from his face.

"You knew where that money was coming from," I continued, standing up slowly and looking down at him. "You sat at Thanksgiving dinner and made fun of my career, while secretly living off my paychecks. You are just as much of a thief as they are."

"Catherine... please," Mark whispered, his bravado entirely destroyed. "If you don't help us, my house is going to be foreclosed on. My wife is threatening to leave me with the kids. I can't take Mom and Dad in—we don't have room!"

"Then I suggest you sell your sports car, Mark," I said. "Because my bank is closed forever."

I tapped the button on my intercom. "Security, please escort this man out of the building. If he sets foot on the property again, file a formal trespassing notice."

Two heavy security guards stepped into the office, took Mark firmly by the arms, and dragged him backward out the door. He didn't scream anymore. He just stared at me with wide, hollow eyes as the glass doors closed between us.
