Chapter 3 - The Digital Shadow

Across the city at the Lakewood Police Department precinct, Detective Maya Brooks stared at her computer monitor, replaying the raw, unedited security footage from the hospital’s internal network.

Unlike the clipped, sensationalized eleven-second video that had gone viral online, the full archival footage captured the entire sequence of events from multiple camera angles.

Maya paused the video at 10:14 AM.

On screen, security officer Evan Cole stood in the restricted corridor outside Zone Four. His posture was rigid. He kept looking down at his phone, his thumb moving frantically across the screen.

Maya zoomed in on Evan’s face. Beads of sweat glistened on his forehead. He wasn't walking with the steady, purposeful stride of a routine equipment delivery. He looked trapped—a man executing an order he despised.

She tracked him as he swiped his badge. The electronic log confirmed the access: Badge ID 14 – Officer Evan Cole.

She then watched the moment the steel cylinder crossed the five-gauss line. The magnetic field caught the cart with terrifying violence, ripping it from Evan’s hands. But what caught Maya’s attention wasn't the crash itself; it was Evan’s immediate reaction.

Instead of shouting for help or rushing toward the control room to check on the occupants, Evan backed away into the shadows of the hallway, turned on his heel, and hurried toward the emergency exit stairs.

Maya reached for her desk phone and dialed the hospital’s security director.

“I need the complete communications log for Officer Evan Cole over the last forty-eight hours,” Maya said without preamble. “Phone calls, internal messaging, and badge swipe history. Send it to my terminal right now.”

Within minutes, a secure digital file pinged her inbox.

Maya began cross-referencing the timestamps. At 10:05 AM—ten minutes before the incident—Evan had received an encrypted text message from an unknown VoIP number.

The text read:

You have thirty seconds. Complete the delivery or the payment is canceled.

A second message followed immediately:

Your daughter’s surgery is tomorrow. Do not make us reconsider.

Maya leaned back in her chair, the pieces of the puzzle snapping violently into place. This wasn't a freak accident caused by a negligent doctor or a confused security guard.

It was deliberate sabotage. Someone had used Evan Cole’s daughter as leverage to force an armed metal cylinder into an active magnetic resonance suite.

And Dr. Grace Miller had been the convenient scapegoat chosen to take the fall.
