CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET INSIDE THE EVIDENCE BAG

The question hung in the air.

"Are they really my brothers?"

Ava stared at Dr. Ethan Cole.

Waiting.

Hoping.

Fearing the answer all at once.

Outside the neonatal ward, snow slammed against the windows as the winter storm intensified.

Red emergency lights continued flashing across the glass.

Inside, the twins slept peacefully.

Completely unaware that their existence had already changed multiple lives.

And threatened many more.

Dr. Cole slowly stood.

The evidence bag remained clenched in his hands.

For a moment, Ava thought he might refuse to answer.

Instead, he glanced toward the security cameras mounted in the ceiling.

Then toward the officers stationed outside the ward.

Only after making certain they were alone did he speak.

"Ava..."

His voice sounded tired.

"Heavier than you've ever heard it."

"There are things about your family that were hidden from you."

A chill ran through her.

"What things?"

Dr. Cole hesitated.

Then removed a folded photograph from inside the evidence bag.

The picture looked old.

Worn.

Frequently handled.

He handed it to her.

Ava stared.

Her hands immediately began shaking.

The woman in the photograph was her mother.

There was no mistake.

The same smile.

The same eyes.

The same face she remembered from childhood.

But she wasn't alone.

Standing beside her was a man Ava had never seen before.

And in her mother's arms...

Were two newborn babies.

Twins.

Ava's heart pounded.

"What is this?"

Dr. Cole lowered his eyes.

"The day that photograph was taken was eleven years ago."

The room spun.

Eleven years.

The exact year she was born.

"No."

The word escaped her lips.

Dr. Cole nodded sadly.

"Your mother gave birth to triplets."

Ava couldn't breathe.

"What?"

"You."

His voice cracked slightly.

"And two baby boys."

The photograph slipped from her fingers.

Triplets.

Brothers.

Her brothers.

The realization hit like an earthquake.

Everything she thought she knew about her life suddenly felt uncertain.

Broken.

Incomplete.

Before she could ask another question, alarms suddenly erupted throughout the hospital.

The shrill sound echoed through every corridor.

Every floor.

Every room.

Doctors looked up.

Nurses froze.

Patients startled awake.

The twins immediately began crying inside their incubators.

Dr. Cole's face turned white.

"No."

Ava looked at him.

"What is it?"

The answer came seconds later.

A security officer burst through the ward doors.

Out of breath.

Terrified.

"Doctor, they've breached the lower level."

The room froze.

"They're inside."

Three floors below, chaos had already begun.

The four men from the parking garage had entered through a restricted maintenance entrance.

Professional.

Organized.

Prepared.

They bypassed security checkpoints in minutes.

As if they already knew the building's layout.

As if someone had provided inside information.

Two guards were injured.

Another had disappeared.

Nobody knew where.

The hospital immediately entered lockdown.

Automatic steel doors sealed sections of the building.

Elevators stopped functioning.

Emergency protocols activated.

But Dr. Cole knew something the others didn't.

These men weren't here to steal money.

They weren't here to kidnap anyone.

They were hunting one thing.

The evidence bag.

Ava watched Dr. Cole's expression darken.

"What's in that bag?"

For several seconds, he didn't answer.

Then he looked directly into her eyes.

"The truth."

Her pulse quickened.

"What truth?"

Dr. Cole swallowed.

"The truth about what happened to your family."

The doctor led Ava into a secure consultation room hidden behind the neonatal ward.

A reinforced steel door locked behind them.

For the first time all night, they were truly alone.

Dr. Cole placed the evidence bag on the table.

Then carefully removed several documents.

DNA reports.

Birth certificates.

Medical records.

Court filings.

And finally...

A newspaper clipping.

Eleven years old.

Ava immediately recognized the headline.

Even before she read it.

Because it involved the death of her parents.

Or at least the death she had always believed happened.

Her eyes widened.

The article described a house fire.

A tragic accident.

Two adults presumed dead.

Three infants missing.

The case had never been solved.

Ava looked up.

Confused.

"My parents died in a car accident."

Dr. Cole closed his eyes.

"No."

The room became silent.

"That's what your grandmother told you."

Ava felt her stomach drop.

"What are you saying?"

The doctor slid another document across the table.

An official police report.

Recently unsealed.

The conclusion highlighted in yellow.

The fire had been intentionally set.

Ava stared.

Unable to process the words.

Someone had murdered her parents.

And for eleven years, she had never known.

Then came the worst part.

The part that made everything else seem small.

Dr. Cole opened the final file.

Inside were photographs.

Modern photographs.

Recent photographs.

One image showed a baby boy.

Another showed a second baby boy.

The twins sleeping in the neonatal ward.

Then he revealed the final photograph.

Ava's breath caught.

A man stood holding one of the twins.

A wealthy businessman with silver hair and a familiar face.

Too familiar.

Because she had seen that face many times.

In family photo albums.

On her grandmother's mantle.

On birthday cards.

Ava's hands began trembling.

"No."

Dr. Cole looked away.

Because he already knew she recognized him.

The man in the photograph wasn't a stranger.

He was her grandfather.

The man her grandmother claimed had died before she was born.

Except he wasn't dead.

He was alive.

And somehow connected to everything.

The fire.

The missing babies.

The lies.

The twins.

Before Ava could speak, another sound echoed through the hallway outside.

A gunshot.

Then another.

Closer this time.

Much closer.

Dr. Cole immediately gathered the evidence back into the bag.

His face turned pale.

"They found this floor."

Ava's heart pounded.

"What do we do?"

The doctor looked toward the locked door.

Then toward the sleeping twins visible through the observation window.

Finally, he made a decision.

A dangerous one.

The kind that could save lives.

Or cost them.

He handed the evidence bag to Ava.

And said five words that changed everything.

"Don't let them take this."

At that exact moment, someone began pounding on the steel door.

Hard.

Violently.

And whoever stood on the other side...

May you like

Was no longer trying to get in quietly.
