Chapter 8 - The First True Sunrise

The sun was climbing high into a cloudless blue sky as I stepped out onto the lush green grass of our new backyard.
There were no shadows hiding in the corners of this house. No dark porches waiting to surprise us. No late-night phone calls that made my stomach drop into an abyss of fear.
Lily squealed with delight as she waddled across the lawn toward me, holding up a dandelion she had plucked from the garden like it was a priceless treasure.
‘Look, Mommy! A flower!’ she cheered, her bright blue eyes shining with absolute, unfiltered joy.
I dropped to my knees, wrapping my arms around her small, warm body, burying my face in her soft curls as she giggled against my neck.
‘I see it, baby,’ I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. ‘It’s the most beautiful flower in the world.’
My mother stepped out onto the back deck holding a tray of fresh lemonade, smiling as she watched us. The breeze rustled through the maple trees overhead, carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine from the garden fence.
The dark night when the world had tried to cave in on us felt like a lifetime ago. The traps had been broken, the lies had been exposed, and the future stretched out before us wide, bright, and completely free.

I looked up at the clear sky, took a deep, steady breath of the morning air, and smiled.
We had made it through the dark. And the sunrise belonged entirely to us.
