Chapter 4 - The Interrogation Room

The interview room at the Westbridge Police Department smelled of stale black coffee and cheap lemon disinfectant.

Daniel Miller sat at the center of the steel table, his expensive Italian wool suit looking horribly out of place in the sterile, fluorescent-lit box. His wrists were bare—he hadn't been formally arrested yet, but two patrol officers stationed outside the heavy glass door ensured he wasn't going anywhere.

The door clicked open.

Elena walked in, carrying a thick manila folder and a digital audio recorder. She didn't sit down immediately. She stood behind the metal chair opposite Daniel, leaning forward with her palms flat on the table, her eyes boring into him.

"Your sister-in-law is currently on life support at Westbridge Medical Center," Elena said, her voice completely devoid of warmth. "She suffered a catastrophic hemorrhage following an unassisted birth in a freezing guesthouse. If she dies, Mr. Miller, you are looking at negligent homicide, kidnapping, and conspiracy charges that will put you away for the rest of your natural life."

Daniel scoffed, though his left eye twitched nervously. "That's absurd. Mia was an adult. She came to me of her own free will. She asked for a place to stay, and I gave her one out of family obligation. If her health deteriorated, that’s tragic, but it’s not a crime."

"Is that why you lied to the police six months ago when she first disappeared?" Elena asked, pulling out a printed copy of the original missing persons report filed by Laura and her parents. "You told investigators that Mia had cleaned out her bank accounts, stolen ten thousand dollars from your joint family business venture, and fled to California with a shady boyfriend. You provided fabricated text message logs to back it up."

Daniel’s jaw tightened. "People run off. They do stupid things."

"People don't run off to California while leaving behind every single piece of identification, all their clothing, their car keys, and their favorite jewelry in your guesthouse," Elena shot back, slamming the printed text logs onto the table. "Our cyber forensics team already ran a preliminary trace on those 'fabricated' text messages you handed us six months ago. They weren't sent from California, Mr. Miller. They were routed through a proxy server operating on a local IP address—registered to a commercial broadband account billed directly to Cain & Miller Real Estate Investments. Your company."

Silence descended upon the room. The hum of the fluorescent overhead light felt deafening.

Daniel swallowed hard, his arrogant facade finally beginning to crack around the edges. "Anyone could have used our office Wi-Fi. It’s an open commercial building."

"Right. An open commercial building where you just happened to keep a pregnant, vulnerable young woman locked away in a backyard shed while convincing your pregnant wife that her sister had abandoned her out of pure malice," Elena leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a low, venomous growl. "Why, Daniel? Why keep her hidden? Why fabricate a story about her stealing from you? What did Mia know about you?"

Daniel looked away, staring stubbornly at the mirrored glass on the far wall. "She didn't know anything. I was just trying to help her out of a bad spot."

"Help her by turning her into a prisoner?"

Before Daniel could reply, the door swung open again. Sergeant Mara Ellis stepped into the room, holding a clear plastic evidence bag containing a small, scratched flash drive.

"Cruz," Mara said, her expression grim. "We just searched Daniel’s office safe downtown. We found this hidden behind the false back of a filing cabinet."

Elena took the evidence bag. Printed on a small white label affixed to the flash drive was a single handwritten word: INSURANCE.

"What is this?" Elena demanded, holding it up.

Daniel’s face instantly lost every trace of color. The gray pallor returned, but this time it was accompanied by a look of sheer, unmitigated horror. He lunged forward across the table, his hands clawing toward the bag. "Give that back! That's private property! You have no right—"

The two patrol officers rushed in, slamming Daniel back down into his chair and pinning his arms against the metal armrests.

Elena ignored his thrashing. She walked out of the interrogation room, hurried down the corridor to the department’s tech lab, and plugged the flash drive into the station’s secure forensic terminal.

A single folder appeared on the screen: Bennett_Files.

Inside were dozens of scanned financial documents, bank statements, and recorded phone conversations. But what caught Elena’s eye was a video file dated just three days prior to Mia’s disappearance six months ago.

She clicked play.

The video opened on the interior of an upscale downtown conference room—Daniel’s office.

On screen, a visibly younger Mia Bennett was standing near the window, crying hysterically.

"You embezzled the pension funds from the Westbridge municipal development project, Daniel!" Mia’s voice echoed from the computer speakers, sharp and terrified. "You used my signature as a junior accountant to launder three million dollars through offshore shell companies! If the auditors find out, you’re going to prison for twenty years!"

The camera angle shifted—it was surveillance footage from a hidden security lens Daniel had installed himself.

On screen, Daniel walked up to Mia, his expression cold and devoid of human empathy.

"The auditors won't find anything," Daniel said calmly in the video. "Because by tomorrow morning, everyone in town will believe you’re a thief who stole from the family business and skipped town. And if you ever try to come back... if you ever breathe a single word of this to Laura or the police... I’ll make sure you never see the light of day again."

Elena stared at the screen, the entire horrifying puzzle snapping into place with chilling clarity.

Mia hadn't run away. She hadn't stolen anything.

She had uncovered financial fraud that could destroy Daniel’s entire empire. When she threatened to expose him, he had trapped her, isolated her, fabricated a criminal profile to ruin her reputation, and locked her away in the guesthouse—where she eventually became pregnant with his child.

And when she went into labor in the middle of the night, bleeding and terrified, she had no medical help, no phone, and no escape.

Except for an eight-year-old boy with dinosaur pajamas and one red sock.
