Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

The hospital corridors were bustling with the morning shift change when Detective Vance and two uniformed officers stepped out of the elevators. They moved with quiet, purposeful coordination, cutting across the lobby toward the pediatric intensive care waiting area.

Lena stood by the nurse’s station, watching through the glass partition.

Mark and Diane were sitting together on the blue vinyl sofa. Diane was speaking softly, patting her son’s hand with an air of practiced reassurance. Mark looked nervous, his eyes darting toward the elevators every few seconds as if sensing that the invisible net was finally tightening around him.

“Mr. Mark Morgan?” Detective Vance’s voice cut through the murmur of the waiting room.

Mark jumped to his feet, his face instantly twisting into an expression of indignant confusion. “Detective? What’s going on? Is there news about my daughter?”

“We have some questions regarding the prescription sedatives found in your basement, Mr. Morgan,” Vance said, stepping closer while the two uniformed officers flanked him on either side. “And the manipulation of your home security system logs at midnight last night.”

Mark’s face drained of color, but he puffed out his chest defensively. “That’s absurd! Anyone could have gone into the basement! And as for the security system, the house was broken into—Sarah told you she found the front door unlocked!”

“Sarah told us the truth, Mark,” a voice echoed sharply from down the hall.

Everyone turned.

Sarah was walking toward them from the stairwell. She looked exhausted, her hair unbrushed, wearing the same clothes from the night before, but her eyes were burning with a fierce, unwavering clarity. She had been speaking with a hospital social worker and had just been briefed on the forensic findings.

“You set me up,” Sarah said, her voice shaking with rage as she stopped a few feet from her husband. “You told me I was losing my mind for months. You hid my car keys, you moved my things, and you told everyone I was unstable so no one would believe me when I said something was wrong with the baby.”

“Sarah, don't listen to them, they’re lying to you—!” Mark stammered, stepping back until his legs hit the vinyl sofa.

Diane stood up, stepping between her son and Sarah with an imperious glare. “How dare you speak to your husband that way in his time of grief? You are the one who drugged that child! You’re just trying to shift the blame because you couldn't handle the responsibilities of motherhood!”

“Shut up, Mrs. Morgan,” Detective Vance said, stepping firmly into Diane’s personal space. “You’ve helped him cover up his financial fraud and his abuse of an infant for years, haven't you? Writing down every perceived failure in a little black notebook to build a fake psychiatric profile for your daughter-in-law so she’d look like a madwoman when the time came.”

Diane’s chin trembled slightly, but her eyes remained hard as flint. “I am a concerned grandmother protecting my family from an unfit mother.”

“You’re an accessory to attempted murder,” Vance corrected coldly. He nodded to the officers. “Cuff him.”

Before Mark could lunge toward the exit, the two officers moved in. Steel cuffs clicked around his wrists with a sharp, definitive snap.

“You can’t do this!” Mark screamed, straining against the officers as they hauled him toward the elevators. “This is a mistake! Sarah, tell them! Tell them it’s a mistake!”

Sarah didn't say a word. She stood completely still, watching the man she had loved and trusted—the man who had planned to sacrifice their daughter for a life insurance payout—get dragged away in handcuffs.

As the elevator doors closed behind Mark and the officers, the heavy weight that had pressed down on Sarah’s chest for months finally seemed to break. She covered her face with her hands, not crying out of grief, but letting out a long, shuddering breath of absolute release.
