Chapter 6 - Traces of Poison

While Ethan sat by Rachel’s bedside in Room 412, the legal net tightening around Linda Cole expanded with terrifying speed.
Detective Olivia Grant did not stop with Linda’s confession in the interrogation room. Knowing that a woman of Linda’s social standing and calculated malice might have left a wider trail of destruction, Olivia secured a comprehensive search warrant for Linda’s safety deposit box at the Lakewood First National Bank, as well as her personal computer records.
By noon that Saturday, forensic investigators uncovered documents that sent shockwaves through the department.
Inside Linda’s safety deposit box, alongside vintage jewelry and stock certificates, detectives found a handwritten journal dating back nearly seven years.
The pages detailed Linda’s obsessive campaign to control her son’s life following the death of Claire. But a specific entry, dated just four months after Mark married Rachel, made Olivia’s blood run cold.
“Rachel is weak-willed and desperate to please. If she continues to push this adoption nonsense, I will have to find a way to remove her permanently without raising suspicion. A heavy dose of phenobarbital mimics natural cardiac failure in pregnant women. Dr. Miller still owes me a favor from the country club board.”
Olivia immediately requested an audit of Dr. Miller—a retired local physician who had been a longtime friend and financial donor to Linda’s social circle.
When uniformed officers arrived at Dr. Miller’s suburban residence with a warrant, they found the retired doctor frantically shredding prescription pads in his home office. The prescription logs revealed that just three days prior, Dr. Miller had illegally dispensed a twenty-pill schedule-four barbiturate refill under a fictitious patient name at Linda’s direct request, marking it as a "compassionate sample for nervous tension."
By Sunday afternoon, Dr. Miller was sitting in the interrogation cell directly adjacent to Linda Cole. Facing federal drug distribution charges and conspiracy to commit murder, the elderly physician broke under the first twenty minutes of questioning, signing a full confession detailing how Linda had coerced him into providing the sedative under the guise of helping a "distressed stray animal shelter."

Armed with the journal entries, the pharmacy logs, and Dr. Miller’s confession, the District Attorney’s office officially upgraded Linda Cole’s charges from attempted manslaughter to Attempted Premeditated First-Degree Murder and Conspiracy to Commit Murder.
Bail was denied completely. The matriarch of Maple Street would spend her remaining years facing the unforgiving concrete walls of the state women’s penitentiary.
