Chapter 8 - Happily Ever After

Six months later.
Spring in the Hamptons had arrived in a glorious explosion of life. The grand gardens of the Starks estate were covered in blooming cherry blossoms, white tulips, and fresh green grass that smelled of morning dew and new beginnings.
It was 3:00 a.m.
Inside the master bedroom suite, Rory Starks lay asleep in his large four-poster bed.
The room was completely silent, save for the soft tick of the grandfather clock in the hallway and the gentle rhythm of the ocean waves crashing against the distant shoreline.
Suddenly, a tiny, soft pressure landed on the edge of his mattress.
Then another.
Rory’s eyes opened instantly. But there was no panic in his gaze. No cold terror. No racing pulse.
In the pale, silver moonlight filtering through the open curtains, two small figures in matching yellow duck pajamas were carefully crawling onto his bed.
Lily settled on his left side, pulling a corner of his heavy down comforter over her shoulders. Rose nestled on his right, resting her cheek directly against his chest, her small hand clutching a soft, simple white cloth bunny that held no batteries, no wires, and no secrets.
"Daddy...?" Lily whispered sleepily.
"Yes, my sweet girl?" Rory asked, his voice thick with warmth as he reached out, wrapping both arms around his daughters, pulling them tight against his sides.
"Is the clock making that noise?" Rose mumbled, her eyelids heavy.
Rory listened to the quiet, rhythmic tick-tock echoing from the hallway.
"Yes, baby," Rory whispered, kissing the top of Rose’s head, then Lily’s. "It’s just the clock telling us it’s time to sleep."
"It’s not a monster?" Lily asked softly, her voice peaceful, without a trace of fear.
"There are no monsters here, Lily," Rory said softly, looking up at the high ceiling of the room, feeling the steady, rhythmic breathing of his healthy, safe daughters against his ribs. "Not anymore. Daddy cleared them all away."
"Good," Rose murmured, letting out a long, contented sigh. "Because I like this house now. It’s warm."
Within two minutes, both girls were breathing deeply, locked in a peaceful, untroubled sleep that would last until the morning sun filled the room with gold.
Rory lay there in the quiet dark, holding his entire world in his arms.

Outside, the heavy iron gates of the estate stood firm against the night, guarded by men who knew their duty. Down the hallway, Veronica rested peacefully in her new private suite, preparing for another day of changing lives at the foundation. And in the federal holding facilities miles away, the monsters who had tried to destroy this family were nothing more than fading shadows, locked away in silence forever.
Rory closed his eyes, rested his chin on his daughters' soft hair, and drifted off to sleep, knowing that the long, dark night was finally over, and their bright, beautiful dawn was here to stay.
