Chapter 3 - The Legal Siege

After I shut the door on my mother, I thought the worst had passed. I was wrong. The following morning, I received a certified letter—a demand for "grandparent visitation" mediation. My mother wasn't just trying to win an argument; she was weaponizing the law.

I found myself in a sterile lawyer’s office, the smell of stale coffee and ambition hanging in the air. My lawyer, a sharp woman named Sarah, looked over the documents with a grim expression. "She’s claiming you are unstable and attempting to alienate Lily from her 'loving' family," Sarah explained. "It’s a classic tactic of the narcissist. If she can’t control you, she’ll try to control the environment around you."

I spent the next three days in a haze of panic. I contacted Elena, hoping that the common enemy would unite us. We met at a neutral coffee shop, the air between us still brittle. When I told her about the lawsuit, the color drained from her face.

"She’s using Lily," Elena whispered, her hands trembling. "She’s actually using our daughter to hurt us."

The irony was that this maneuver finally solidified our team. We weren't a husband and wife fighting anymore; we were parents defending a fortress. We spent the night at the kitchen table, documenting every interaction, every toxic text, and every instance of emotional abuse from the past five years. It was grueling—revisiting the pain, the slights, and the moments I had been too blind to see. But it was also necessary. By dawn, we had built a dossier that didn't just defend us; it painted a damning picture of my mother’s instability. The "trauma" of that night had finally burned away my delusions.
