Chapter 9 - The Healing Journey

The afternoon air was warm and scented with blooming jasmine as I pulled into the school parking lot.

A crowd of children in bright summer clothes poured out through the double glass doors of the school, laughing and chasing each other toward the waiting cars.

Standing near the playground fence, holding a large blue drawing folder, was Dylan. He was six years old now, taller, his eyes bright with confidence and joy. He was chatting animatedly with two classmates, pointing at something in his folder and laughing freely.

My heart swelled with a deep, profound joy as I watched him.

Six months ago, he had been a timid, watchful child who shrank into silence whenever adults raised their voices. Today, he was vibrant, expressive, and entirely unburdened by fear.

“Mommy!” Dylan caught sight of my car and waved frantically, sprinting across the grass toward the pickup lane.

I opened the passenger door, and he tumbled into his seat, bubbling over with energy.

“Look what I made today in art class!” he announced proudly, pulling a large watercolor painting from his folder.

I leaned over to look at the painting. It showed two figures standing under a bright yellow sun—a tall woman holding the hand of a little boy, surrounded by colorful flowers and a small house with smoke curling from the chimney.

At the top of the paper, written in neat, careful block letters, were the words: MY HAPPY FAMILY.

“It’s beautiful, Dylan,” I whispered, running my fingers gently over his hair. “Who is in the picture?”

“Just us,” Dylan smiled brightly, looking up at me with absolute trust. “Because we’re the best team in the whole world.”

Tears of pure happiness welled in my eyes, but I let them fall without hiding them. I kissed his forehead, pulling his seatbelt securely across his chest.

“Yes, we are, sweetheart,” I said softly. “The absolute best team.”

We drove down the coastal highway as the afternoon sun began its slow descent toward the blue Pacific Ocean, painting the sky in brilliant strokes of gold, rose, and amber.
