Chapter 4 - The Accountant and the Paper Trail

Executing a legal ambush requires precision. Over the next three weeks, Marcus Vance and a forensic accountant named Sarah Lin worked behind the scenes like digital detectives.
Every evening after putting Emma, Sophie, and Noah to bed, I sat at my kitchen table reviewing encrypted emails from Sarah. She mapped out the flow of funds with terrifying clarity.
Mother’s million-dollar commercial property had been sold below market value to a shell company owned by one of Grant’s business associates, who then flipped it six months later for a massive profit. The difference had been funneled through three different dummy accounts before landing in Vanessa’s personal investment fund.
They thought they were untouchable. They thought I was too distracted by single motherhood, scraping by to pay electric bills and grocery tabs, to ever look behind the curtain.
On a Friday afternoon, Noah burst through the front door of our modest rented townhouse, dropping his backpack on the floor and holding up a piece of construction paper covered in neon green finger paint.
"Look, Mom! I got a gold star for my dinosaur drawing!"
I scooped him up into my arms, burying my face in his messy brown hair, breathing in the scent of playground dirt and apple juice.
"That is the most magnificent dinosaur I have ever seen in my life, buddy," I laughed, setting him down. "Where should we put it?"
"On the fridge! Right in the middle!"
As Noah ran to the kitchen, I looked around our little home. It wasn't fancy. The linoleum in the kitchen was peeling at the corners, and the front door drafty in the winter. But it was filled with warmth, loud laughter, and unconditional love.
My phone buzzed on the counter. An email notification from Marcus Vance.
Subject: The trap is set.
Claire, the probate judge signed the emergency asset freeze order this morning. Federal marshals and court receivers are currently serving notices at Vanessa’s residence, Grant’s office, and your father’s country club. By 5:00 p.m., every single account tied to V&G Holdings will be locked tight. Be ready. They're going to come looking for answers.

I stared at the screen, my heart beating a steady, rhythmic cadence.
The war had officially begun.
