Chapter 3 - The Witness in the Shadows

By midnight, the Whitestone Estate had transformed from a celebration of love into a sterile crime scene. Yellow police tape crisscrossed the grand entrance. Detectives from the Lake Geneva Police Department, assisted by state investigators, combed through the ballroom, bagging champagne glasses, questioning trembling witnesses, and collecting forensic samples.
Upstairs in a private bridal suite overlooking the lake, Claire sat on the edge of an armchair, still wearing her wedding dress. The silk and lace felt like heavy armor she couldn't strip off.
Emma was finally asleep on the sofa, exhausted from tears and terror, her small hand still curled into a fist as if holding onto an invisible shield. Ryan sat in a chair near the door, keeping a silent, protective watch, while Grace paced softly by the window.
“The police are towing Ethan’s car back to the station,” Grace whispered, keeping her voice low so she wouldn't wake Emma. “And they’ve impounded his laptop and personal phone from his suite downstairs. Apparently, the moment he was cuffed, he demanded a high-priced defense attorney before he’d utter another syllable.”
Claire didn't look up from her hands. Her fingers traced the cold metal of the wedding band she hadn't yet managed to pull off her finger.
“He didn't just manipulate me, Grace,” Claire said, her voice hollow, stripped of all emotion. “He manufactured my grief. Every time I cried over Michael, every time I couldn't get out of bed, he was right there holding my hand—knowing damn well he was the reason I was crying in the first place.”
“You couldn't have known, Claire,” Ryan said from the doorway, his voice thick with suppressed rage. “None of us knew. Ethan played the long game. He waited for us to drop our guard, integrated himself into this family, and made himself indispensable.”
“Emma said something else,” Claire murmured, lifting her head.
Grace stopped pacing. “What do you mean?”
“Before the wedding started... while we were taking photos by the dock,” Claire recalled, her brow furrowing as the memory clicked into place. “Emma was playing near the boathouse. She came running back to me, holding a crumpled piece of paper. She asked me why a strange lady outside the kitchen window looked so angry at Uncle Ethan.”
Ryan bolted upright. “A strange woman? Did Emma describe her?”
“She said the woman had dark hair tied back in a scarf, and she was yelling at Ethan about money,” Claire said, standing up from the armchair, the heavy tulle of her wedding dress rustling around her ankles. “Ethan told Emma it was just a crazy panhandler and chased her away. I didn't think anything of it. I thought it was just someone looking for a handout near the estate.”
Grace’s eyes widened. “The woman Emma mentioned in her speech! ‘I heard the lady say it. She came to his apartment and asked for money. She said she saw him push Daddy.’”
Claire’s blood ran cold.
“It wasn't a panhandler,” Claire realized, the pieces snapping together with terrifying precision. “It was a witness. Someone saw what happened on that construction site in River North two years ago, and she’s been blackmailing Ethan ever since.”

Ryan didn't hesitate. He grabbed his car keys off the side table.
“I’m calling Detective Miller right now,” Ryan said, pulling out his phone. “If there’s a witness out there who knows the truth about Michael’s death, we need to find her before Ethan’s defense team tracks her down and silences her for good.”
