Chapter 6 - The Whitmore Backlash

If Arthur and Vanessa thought they could bully their way back into Margaret’s good graces, they severely underestimated the fortress Katherine Vance and the legal team had built around the matriarch.
When Arthur and Vanessa stormed Margaret’s mansion demanding answers, they didn't find Margaret waiting with open arms to scold and forgive them.
Instead, two uniformed security guards blocked the double doors of the foyer, their arms crossed over their chests like stone statues.
“Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore,” one of the guards said coldly, his voice devoid of any respect. “You are not on the approved visitor registry for this property. You must leave immediately.”
“Are you out of your mind?!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing off the marble walls. “That is my mother-in-law inside! We have every right to see her! Margaret! Margaret, open this door! You’re being manipulated by an opportunistic nurse!”
The heavy oak doors remained firmly shut.
From the second-floor balcony, Margaret looked down at them. She wasn't angry. She looked profoundly tired, as if she were watching two unruly children throwing a tantrum in a grocery store aisle.
“Vanessa,” Margaret’s voice drifted down from above, calm and icy. “Your presence in this house is no longer welcome. Neither is Arthur’s.”
Arthur pushed past the guard, lunging toward the bottom of the grand staircase. “Mother! You can’t do this to us! We are your family! You’re giving our inheritance—our birthright—to a stranger and her brat?!”
At the word brat, Margaret’s eyes flashed with sudden, dangerous fury.
“She is not a stranger, Arthur. And little Mia is worth ten of you,” Margaret said, her voice rising in volume and authority. “You raised Sloane to mock a seven-year-old child for being poor. You raised your family to believe that a nurse—someone who spends her nights keeping people alive while you sleep in luxury—is ‘lowly.’ You have taught your children nothing of value.”
“We made mistakes!” Vanessa cried out, crocodile tears springing to her eyes. “We’ll apologize! We’ll apologize to Elena! We’ll invite them over for dinner—!”
“The time for apologies has passed,” Margaret interrupted flatly. “The trust has been transferred. The accounts are frozen. If you ever step foot on this property again, Katherine Vance will have you arrested for trespassing and harassment.”

Margaret turned slowly and walked back down the hallway, her footsteps fading away until absolute silence swallowed the foyer.
Arthur stood frozen at the foot of the stairs, his chest heaving. His social standing, his wealth, his country club empire, his entire identity—evaporated in less than twenty-four hours because his wife and daughter couldn't resist the urge to humiliate a little girl in a blue dress.
