Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

By Thursday morning, the grief had hardened into cold, calculated strategy.

I contacted Daniel Cho—the same brilliant, ruthless family law attorney who had handled my retirement and corporate asset restructuring years ago. When Daniel arrived at my house at 8:00 a.m., he didn't bring a briefcase full of sympathy cards. He brought a portable scanner, a secure laptop, and a look of grim determination.

We sat at the kitchen table while the girls were upstairs in the sunroom, finishing their breakfast. I laid out Demi’s leather notebook, the microcassette recorder, and a stack of financial printouts Baylee had managed to download from Calvin’s home office desktop before he even realized she had access.

Daniel flipped through the notebook, his eyes widening with every turn of the page.

"This is extraordinary," Daniel murmured, adjusting his glasses. "Ms. Sterling was meticulous. She tracked every single unauthorized transfer Calvin made from her personal investment accounts into offshore accounts he shares with his fiancée, Vanessa Wright."

"Who is Vanessa Wright?" I asked, pouring us both black coffee.

"Vanessa is a junior partner at Meridian Wealth," Daniel replied, tapping a finger on a printed corporate directory page. "Coincidentally, the very firm that manages Calvin’s employer’s venture capital. More importantly, she’s the daughter of Arthur Wright—the CEO of Meridian. Calvin didn't just leave your daughter for a random mistress, Johnny. He traded up into high society, financing his new life by bleeding your daughter’s estate dry while she was fighting for her life in the hospital ward."

A dark rage flickered in my chest. "Can we freeze his assets? Can we stop him from accessing the corporate accounts?"

"Not just freeze them," Daniel smiled, a sharp, humorless curve of his lips. "Under the terms of the pre-nuptial trust Demi secretly maintained, any attempt to misappropriate funds, commit marital fraud, or abandon the household constitutes an automatic forfeiture of all shared assets. Furthermore, because he abandoned his minor children at a gravesite and publicly declared his intent to dump them into foster care, we have grounds for an emergency custody injunction and an immediate criminal inquiry into financial elder and parental endangerment."

"And the wedding?" I asked. "He’s planning a lavish ceremony at the St. Regis Hotel in downtown Richmond in less than three weeks. Invitations have already gone out to half the city’s corporate elite."

Daniel reached into his briefcase and pulled out the cream-colored envelope Baylee had retrieved from the floorboards.

"That envelope," Daniel said softly, pointing a pen at it, "is the detonator. But timing is everything. If we trigger this too early, Calvin will panic, liquidate whatever cash he has left, and try to flee jurisdiction. We need to let him walk right up to the altar. We need him to stand in front of two hundred of Richmond’s most prominent socialites, believing he has won everything... and then, we pull the rug out from under him."

"How?"

May you like

"Leave that to me," Daniel said, standing up and sliding his laptop back into his case. "You just keep the girls safe, keep the notebook locked in a secure vault, and let Calvin dig his own grave. By the time he realizes what hit him, he won't even have a pair of shoes to his name."

As Daniel walked out the front door, I looked out the living room window. Baylee, Nora, and little Hailey were sitting on the porch swing, laughing softly as the golden morning sunlight washed over them. They were bruised by grief, but they weren't broken. They were Demi’s daughters. And Calvin was about to find out what happens when you wake a sleeping dragon.
