Chapter 8 - The Reading of the Will

The minister adjusted his glasses, held the thick parchment up to the microphone, and began to read Rose's final words to the room:

'To those assembled at the wedding of Arthur Sterling and Evelyn Vance:'

'If you are hearing these words, it means I am resting in the ground, and my husband has fulfilled every prediction I made during the final months of my life.'

A sharp, shocked hush fell over the crowd. Evelyn’s father looked at Arthur, his jaw dropping open.

'To my husband, Arthur:' the minister read, his voice steady and solemn. 'You believed that by transferring six hundred and forty thousand dollars out of my children's college trust into Evelyn Holdings LLC, you had secured your future. You believed that by forging my signature on the Tybee Island deed while I was heavily medicated at Emory Hospital, you had erased my family's legacy. And you believed that by abandoning our three daughters at my graveside, you could walk into this hall clean.'

"Stop this!" Arthur shrieked, breaking away from the altar and lunging toward the minister to snatch the paper. "He's lying! The old man is insane! Turn off the microphone!"

Before Arthur could reach the podium, two state investigators stepped out from the side curtains, grabbing Arthur by his upper arms and shoving him hard against the white wooden altar railing.

The crowd erupted into total chaos. Women gasped, men stood up on chairs, and news cameras from the local stations—who had been tipped off by my team—began flashing wildly through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

The minister continued reading, raising his voice above the roar of the room:

'What you did not know, Arthur, is that every transaction you executed was mirrored to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Financial Crimes Division four weeks ago. The bank accounts in Belize have been seized. The deed to Palmetto Bluff is voided. And the silver key around our daughter Lucy's neck has unlocked the vault containing sixteen hours of high-definition video and audio recordings from our home.'

Evelyn screamed, clutching her head with her manicured hands. "Artie?! What is she talking about?! What about the money for the house?!"

Arthur didn't answer her. He was staring up at the balcony, his eyes wide with absolute, unadulterated terror, his breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps.

The minister folded the parchment, looking down at Arthur with pure coldness.

'You thought my death was your fresh start, Arthur,' the minister concluded from memory. 'It was actually your trap. Signed, Rose Wilson-Sterling.'
