Chapter 5 - The Reckoning of the Guilty

Three weeks passed like a slow-moving storm.

The fallout from the wedding day disaster tore through Diane’s side of the family like a wildfire through dry brush. The legal machinery we had set in motion proved to be entirely unstoppable.

Wade was denied bail on multiple felony charges, including aggravated child abuse, false imprisonment, and domestic assault. The prosecution had meticulously built a case using Ava’s photographic evidence, the medical reports from Tommy’s hospital intake, and the panicked text message threads recovered from Wade’s phone.

Arthur Sterling’s corporate empire quickly distanced itself from the scandal. Within forty-eight hours of Wade’s arrest, the board of directors at Sterling Enterprises voted unanimously to terminate Arthur and strip the family of all executive holdings, citing severe reputational damage and ethical breaches. The mighty Sterling name, built on decades of arrogant wealth and untouchable privilege, crumbled overnight under the harsh light of public exposure.

Diane tried everything to salvage what was left of her life. She filed for an immediate, expedited divorce from Wade, issuing tearful public statements claiming she had been manipulated and gaslit by a monster. But the community—and her own family—was unforgiving. Her parents retreated into bitter seclusion, overwhelmed by the shame of their own complicity. Russ and Fen reached out to apologize, sending long, agonizing emails expressing deep remorse for ignoring Ava’s warnings.

We didn't reply to any of them. Some apologies are too late to fix the damage, and some bridges deserve to burn to the ground.

Instead, our small house on Maple Street began to heal.

Tommy’s physical bruises faded within a fortnight, replaced slowly by the bright, chaotic energy of a normal six-year-old boy. The nightmares—where he would wake up screaming, clawing at the walls of his bedroom door—gradually grew less frequent, thanks to a wonderful child therapist we found near the community center. He learned to build towering LEGO castles in the living room, leaving the doors wide open without a shred of fear.

And Ava? Ava went back to high school with her head held high. The whispered rumors among her classmates about the wedding day brawl quickly turned into a quiet, respectful awe. Nobody messed with Ava Vance—not because she was dangerous, but because everyone knew she would burn down the world to protect the people she loved.
