Chapter 8 - The Sunflower Trust

Following the board meeting, the public perception flipped completely.

The local news outlets published full retractions, highlighting the truth about Eleanor's financial rescue and praising my firm stance against familial discrimination. Donors flooded Harborlight with record-breaking contributions, touched by the story of a mother who stood up for her adopted child.

With Eleanor’s legal challenges completely crushed, the grand estate at 1400 Royal Oaks Drive was finally, unequivocally ours.

However, living in a thirty-room mansion just for the three of us felt wasteful. The house had been a fortress of snobbery and isolation for fifty years under Eleanor’s reign. I wanted to transform it into something meaningful.

On a warm Saturday afternoon in late autumn, I gathered Tyler, Lucy, Brooke, and Tom in the estate's main drawing room.

Brooke and Tom looked nervous. Since the board meeting, they had both sent written apologies to Lucy and me, admitting how deeply ashamed they were for their years of silence.

"Thank you for coming," I said, offering them tea.

"Allison," Tom said softly, his hands trembling slightly as he held his cup. "We don't expect you to forgive us right away. What we did—what we allowed Mom to do—was unforgivable."

"I’m not holding a grudge, Tom," I said gently. "Life is too short to carry heavy baggage. But things have to change."

"We know," Brooke said tearfully. "Mom has cut us off too now, you know. She blames us for not lying for her at the board meeting. She’s living alone in that condo, refusing to talk to anyone unless they apologize to her."

"She made her choice, Brooke," I said. "Now I'm making mine."

I pulled out a set of architectural floor plans and laid them across the coffee table.

"I am legally transferring the entire 1400 Royal Oaks estate into a new non-profit trust," I announced. "It will be called the Sunlight Children's Sanctuary."

Brooke gasped. "You're giving away the house?"

"I'm giving it a purpose," I corrected her with a smile. "The main wing and gardens will be converted into a temporary respite home and creative learning center for adopted and foster children transitioning into permanent families. We will have art studios, tutoring rooms, and garden therapy programs."

Lucy’s eyes lit up with pure joy. "Mommy! Other kids get to come play in the garden?!"

"Yes, baby," I laughed, kissing her cheek. "All the kids who need a safe, happy place to be themselves."

"What about you guys?" Tom asked, looking at the plans in awe.

"We are keeping the east wing as our private family home," I explained. "It has its own entrance, four bedrooms, and a private courtyard. It's plenty of space for us."

Tyler looked over the blueprints, a proud, handsome smile spreading across his face. "Mom, this is incredible. Grandpa would have actually loved this. He always hated how stuffy Grandma made this place."

May you like

"I want you both to be on the advisory board, Brooke," I said, looking at my sister. "If you really want to make amends, help me build a place where no child ever feels like an outsider."

Brooke broke down in tears, reaching across the table to squeeze my hand tightly. "I would be honored, Allison. So honored."
