Chapter 4 - The Arrest and the Unraveling

Back at the Davis estate, the flashing police lights had long since faded, but the neighborhood was alive with whispers. Neighbors peered through sheer curtains, recording videos on their phones as two county transport vans backed up to the front portico.

Inside the house, the engagement party decorations still hung from the ceiling—expensive silk banners, fairy lights, and towering floral arrangements that now looked like the tragic set pieces of a grotesque comedy.

My niece, Chloe, sat alone on the sweeping staircase, her party sash still draped crookedly across her designer gown, her face stained with smeared mascara. She had spent the last two hours watching her grandparents get hauled out in handcuffs and listening to her mother scream hysterically as she was pushed into the back of a police cruiser.

For seventeen years, Chloe had been taught to believe she was royalty, that the Davis family name was a bulletproof shield against the ugliness of the world. Now, the shield had shattered into dust.

A knock sounded at the front door.

Chloe didn't move. She just stared at the marble floor until the door slowly pushed open.

Detective Vance stepped into the foyer, accompanied by a female child protective services caseworker named Miller.

“Chloe Davis?” Vance asked gently, closing the door behind her.

Chloe slowly looked up, her lower lip trembling. “Are... are they coming back?”

“No, Chloe, they aren't,” Vance said, walking over and standing at the base of the stairs. “Your grandparents are being held without bail on felony charges of child abuse and conspiracy. Your mother is facing similar charges for her direct involvement in what happened to your cousin Lily.”

Chloe buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with sobs. “I didn't know... I swear I didn't know they put her in the trash. Grandma just told me Lily went home early because she was sick!”

Caseworker Miller stepped forward, holding a clipboard. “We know you didn't participate in the physical act, Chloe. But under state law, since you are a minor and your legal guardians have been incarcerated, we need to arrange temporary placement. Do you have any other relatives in the area?”

Chloe raised her head, her eyes wide with sudden, terrifying realization. Her entire world had vanished in less than twelve hours. The grandparents who funded her shopping sprees were criminals. The mother who coddled her was facing prison time.

And the aunt and cousin they had treated like garbage were the only people left in the world with any decency.

“My... my Aunt Sarah,” Chloe whispered, her voice cracking. “Can I call Aunt Sarah?”

Detective Vance exchanged a quiet look with the caseworker. A small, knowing smile crossed Vance’s lips.

“Well,” Vance said softly. “I’m sure your aunt has a lot on her plate right now at the hospital with Lily. But let’s see if we can make a phone call.”
