Chapter 3 - The First Light of Reality

The Los Angeles morning sun broke over the Santa Monica mountains at 6:15 AM, casting a golden glow across the manicured lawns of Bel Air. Inside the grand master suite of 442 Vista Ridge Drive, Victor Hayes stretched luxuriously under Egyptian cotton sheets.

Life was good. At thirty years old, he had everything a man could want: a multi-million-dollar estate, a stunning wife from high society, and a lifestyle subsidized by an endless stream of invisible capital.

Beside him, Vanessa stirred, scrolling sleepily through her tablet. "Are we playing tennis with the Barclays today, or should we stop by the country club first?" she murmured, her eyes still closed.

"Country club first," Victor replied with a smug smirk. "And tell your father to review those venture capital proposals. I'm thinking of expanding my consulting firm into downtown real estate. Mom’s old business contacts are finally taking me seriously now that I'm hosting parties of this caliber."

Before Vanessa could answer, a harsh, continuous pounding echoed from the front foyer.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

Victor frowned, sitting up and pulling on a silk bathrobe. "Who the hell is at the door at this hour? The housekeeper isn't scheduled until nine."

He walked out of the master suite, marched down the sweeping staircase, and yanked the heavy mahogany front door open, ready to yell at whoever dared disturb his morning peace.

Instead of a delivery driver or a neighbor, he found a uniformed Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy standing flanked by two corporate attorneys carrying heavy leather briefcases. Behind them stood Marcus Sterling.

"Can I help you?" Victor snapped, crossing his arms. "This is private property. You're trespassing."

"Mr. Victor Hayes?" the deputy asked, holding out a thick stack of legal documents.

"Yes. What is this about?"

"You are being served with an immediate Notice to Quit and Vacate Premises, alongside a formal Order of Restructuring issued by Hayes Holdings LLC," the deputy stated flatly. "You have forty-eight hours to remove your personal belongings from the premises. Furthermore, all corporate accounts, vehicle leases, and utility services associated with this residency have been terminated as of 6:00 AM today."

Victor stared at the papers, his mind blanking for a moment. He let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "Are you out of your mind? My mother bought this house for me! It’s mine! I am the sole owner of this estate!"

Marcus Sterling stepped forward, his expression cold and professional. "You were never the owner, Victor. You were a guest in a corporate-owned asset. And as of this morning, your invitation has been permanently revoked."

"That's a lie!" Victor shrieked, his voice cracking as panic began to bubble up in his chest. "My mother gave me this house! She signed over everything when we moved in!"

"She did no such thing," Marcus said calmly, opening a file and displaying the original deed. "Look at the signature. Eleanor Hayes is the sole shareholder of Hayes Holdings LLC. You hold zero equity, zero title, and zero legal claim to this property."

Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs, wrapped in a designer nightgown, looking down with a bewildered expression. "Victor? What's going on? Who are these people?"

"They're insane!" Victor shouted up to her, his face turning pale. "Call my mother! Tell her to fix this right now!"

Victor scrambled for his phone, his fingers trembling violently as he dialed my personal number. It rang twice before clicking over to voicemail.

He dialed again. Straight to voicemail.

He tried a third time, his voice pitching higher into desperation. "Pick up, Mom! Pick up the phone! Some crazy people are here claiming we have to leave the house! Pick up!"

The phone remained silent.

Marcus turned to the deputies. "We will return tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM with the locksmiths and movers to inventory remaining assets. Good morning, Mr. Hayes."

As the officials turned and walked down the driveway, Victor stood frozen in the doorway, the morning breeze chilling his skin. The illusion of his invincible empire had just shattered into a million jagged pieces.
