Chapter 4 - The Boardroom of Reality

I waited until the family gala, the biggest event of the Montgomery social calendar. The mansion was draped in gold and velvet, filled with the city’s elite. Margaret stood in the center of the ballroom, looking like a queen, and Daniel stood by her side, looking like a prince who had finally accepted his role as her heir.
I didn't come in a gown. I came in a suit, carrying a folder that looked innocuous but contained the death warrant for the Montgomery social standing.
I walked to the microphone during the toast, the room falling silent as the band died down. "Tonight," I said, my voice projecting across the ballroom with a clarity that silenced the room, "we are celebrating the legacy of the Montgomery family. A legacy that is so precious, it is currently being used to mask a series of systemic frauds."
Margaret laughed, a sharp, shrill sound. "Allison, you've had too much champagne. Security—"
"Security should stay where they are," I interrupted, projecting the documents onto the massive projector screen behind the stage. "Because if they move, I release the records of the shell companies to the district attorney’s office. Every one of them."
The room erupted in gasps. The screens displayed the wire transfers, the forged signatures, and the bankruptcy filings that were being hidden behind the facade of wealth. Margaret’s face went from white to a sickly, mottled purple. Daniel stared at the screen, his mouth agape, as he saw the name of his own firm linked to the laundering schemes his mother had orchestrated.

"You wouldn't," Daniel whispered, moving toward me with a desperate look in his eyes.
"I have done it, Daniel," I said, looking him in the eye. "And I would do it again to protect my son from becoming a pawn in your mother's rotting game. The house of cards is falling. And I am the one who pushed it."
