Chapter 4 - Federal Handcuffs in the Glass Ballroom

The double doors banged against the limestone walls, echoing like artillery fire through the vaulted ceiling.
Four tall, broad-shouldered men in dark federal suits strode into the ballroom, flanked by two uniformed state troopers. They moved with the cold, unyielding efficiency of a tactical unit executing a high-priority warrant.
The lead agent—a senior investigator with the Federal Financial Crimes and Arson Division whose badge gleamed under the crystal chandeliers—strode straight down the center aisle, ignoring the stunned gasps of the remaining guests.
He stopped directly in front of Lorraine, who froze mid-stride, her arms still outstretched toward the stage.
“Mrs. Lorraine Vance-Ashford?” the agent asked, his voice flat and emotionless.
“I—I am a guest of honor at this establishment! You cannot possibly—this is a private wedding reception!” Lorraine sputtered, her aristocratic veneer shattering into a million jagged pieces.
The agent pulled a crisp, folded document from his coat pocket and snapped it open with a sharp thwip.
“Special Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation,” he announced loudly. “Mrs. Vance-Ashford, you are formally placed under arrest for corporate fraud, wire embezzlement, conspiracy to commit arson, and reckless endangerment resulting in grievous bodily harm.”
Before Lorraine could draw another breath, two agents stepped forward, gently but with absolute, unyielding strength, pulling her arms behind her back. The heavy, metallic click of steel handcuffs echoed chillingly across the silent ballroom.
“No! No, you can't touch me! Do you know who my husband is? Do you know who our lawyers are?” Lorraine shrieked, kicking her designer heels against the marble floor as she was spun around and led away.
“We know exactly who your lawyers are, Mrs. Vance,” Agent Miller replied coolly. “They were served with federal asset-freeze notices forty-five minutes ago.”
Agent Miller turned his gaze toward Thomas Vance, who was still trying to push past the security guards near the side exit. Two troopers intercepted him instantly, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping the second set of cuffs onto his wrists with practiced ease.
“Mr. Thomas Vance, you are also named in the federal indictment as a primary co-conspirator in the Meridian Holdings fraud scheme and the destruction of federal evidence,” Miller stated, guiding Thomas backward down the aisle.
The ballroom descended into absolute pandemonium.
Several journalists from financial news syndicates—who had been invited by Lorraine to capture her family's social triumph—now scrambled across the room, flashing cameras furiously as the Ashford family dynasty was dismantled in real-time under the glare of wedding chandeliers.
Daniel stepped back up to me, sliding his arm around my waist once more. He pulled me close, pressing a soft kiss against my temple.

“The show is over for them,” Daniel whispered softly.
“No,” I replied, watching the federal agents escort Lorraine and Thomas out the glass doors, their designer clothes dragging across the floor. “The show is just beginning.”
