Chapter 6 - The Solarium Confrontation

The solarium was a glass-domed paradise of exotic plants, white wicker furniture, and bright morning sunlight.

When Luca pushed the double doors open, the contrast between the tranquil setting and the brewing storm inside was absolute.

Vanessa Vale sat at a marble table, sipping an espresso while wearing a pristine white linen sundress. Across from her sat Marcus Vance—a slick, impeccably groomed man in his late forties with wire-rimmed glasses and a tailored Brioni suit.

They looked up as Luca and I entered.

For a single, stunning second, color drained entirely from Vanessa’s face. She dropped her porcelain spoon, the ceramic clattering sharply against the saucer.

Marcus, however, recovered faster, adjusting his glasses and slipping into his professional, corporate mask.

“Dante!” Marcus said, standing up with a smooth, false smile. “My goodness, you’re up and about. The doctors said you shouldn’t leave the bedroom yet. And look at you—dressed and ready for business.”

I didn’t smile. I walked slowly across the mosaic tile floor, my leather shoes clicking with deliberate, menacing rhythm. Elena stayed just behind me, holding the sealed glass jar of water like a sacred artifact.

“Business cannot wait, Marcus,” I said, pulling out a chair at the head of the marble table and sitting down uninvited. “Especially when my financial future is being handled with such... enthusiastic care.”

Vanessa finally found her voice, swallowing hard as she forced her posture back into aristocratic poise.

“Dante, darling,” she purred, her voice trembling only slightly. “You look dreadful. You shouldn’t be straining yourself. Let’s go back upstairs. I’ll make you comfortable.”

“I’ve never been more comfortable, Vanessa,” I replied, resting my elbows on the table and locking my eyes onto hers. “In fact, my mind is clearer than it has been in six months. No brain fog. No mysterious freezing chills. It’s amazing what happens when you stop drinking poisoned water.”

Marcus frowned, shooting a sharp, suspicious glance at Vanessa. “Poisoned water? What is he talking about, Vanessa?”

“He’s delusional!” Vanessa snapped, her cool veneer finally cracking into panic. “The fever has rotted his brain! Marcus, call Dr. Harris immediately and have him sedated!”

“Dr. Harris is already downstairs, Vanessa,” I interrupted smoothly. “Along with an independent toxicology inspector from Zurich and two detectives from the Chicago Police Department’s major crimes division.”

The air in the solarium froze instantly—and this time, it had nothing to do with my illness.

Marcus slowly sat back down, his face turning the color of ash. He looked at Vanessa, seeing the terror written plain across her features.

“You... you actually did it?” Marcus whispered, horrified. “You poisoned him?”

“I didn’t do anything!” Vanessa shrieked, standing up so fast her chair tipped backward onto the tile with a crash. “He’s lying! They’re all lying! This is a setup!”

I reached across the table, picked up the thick leather folder containing the asset transfer papers, and tossed them carelessly into a potted fern.

Then I placed the sealed glass jar of water directly in front of Marcus Vance.

“Marcus, as my chief financial officer, you pride yourself on due diligence,” I said coldly. “Take a close look at what your cousin was putting into my nightly hydration pitcher. The independent lab results will be ready by this afternoon. And since your signature is on every single financial structuring document related to this hostile takeover, the detectives outside will love asking you how much of my empire Vanessa promised you in exchange for your silence.”

Marcus went completely rigid. He grabbed the edges of the table, staring at Vanessa with pure venom. “You stupid, arrogant bitch. You involved me in a murder plot?”

“Shut up, Marcus! Shut up!” Vanessa screamed, losing all composure, her manicured nails clawing at her own hair as she realized the trap had snapped shut around her.

Before she could bolt for the glass doors, Luca Moretti stepped forward, blocking her path with the immovable mass of a brick wall.

“Where do you think you’re going, Ms. Vale?” Luca grinned darkly. “The boss hasn't dismissed you yet.”
