Chapter 10 - Reckoning and Redemption

Six months later, the snow fell thick and heavy over Lake Michigan, turning the Chicago skyline into a sparkling winter wonderland.

Inside the grand ballroom of the Gold Coast mansion, the atmosphere was a far cry from the tense, poisoned quarantine of the previous summer. The rooms echoed with laughter, music, and the sound of clinking crystal glasses.

The commission had officially ratified my new council. The South Side territories were integrated, the ports were secure, and my syndicate stood stronger and more untouchable than ever before.

But tonight, the boardroom politics were forgotten.

I stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a classic tuxedo, watching the snow blanket the terrace. My health was fully restored; my blood ran hot and strong through my veins, untouched by frost or poison.

Footsteps approached behind me.

I turned to see Elena walking toward me. She wore an emerald-green silk evening gown that caught the chandelier light, her dark hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. She looked breathtaking—not with the cold, fragile perfection of Vanessa, but with a vibrant, fierce elegance that commanded the entire room.

And holding onto the hem of her dress was Lily, dressed in a miniature white velvet party gown, clutching a silver teddy bear I had bought her for the holidays.

“Are you hiding from your own party, Mr. Chairman?” Elena teased with a soft smile, stopping beside me.

“Never,” I replied, wrapping my arm around her waist and pulling her close against my side. “Just enjoying the view.”

Lily looked up at us, her dark eyes sparkling with mischief. “Mommy, can I have another slice of chocolate cake before bed? Uncle Marcus said I could if I asked nicely.”

“Uncle Marcus is trying to spoil you rotten so you’ll take his side in board meetings,” I laughed, picking the little girl up effortlessly and setting her on my shoulders, exactly the way my father used to carry me when I was a boy.

Lily squealed with delight, grabbing my lapels with both hands. “Is that a yes?”

“That is a strict maybe,” I smiled, looking over at Elena, who was laughing—a warm, bright sound that melted away every remaining shadow of the past.

The cold winter wind howled outside against the reinforced glass of the mansion, rattling the windowpanes with freezing fury. But inside, wrapped in the warmth of true family, the ice didn't stand a chance.

At thirty-two, I was still the youngest and most feared mafia boss Chicago had ever known. But I was no longer dying. I was alive, I was invincible, and for the first time in my life, I had something worth fighting an empire to protect.
