Chapter 5 - The Fortress on the Cliff

Rain hammered relentlessly against the windshield of the Audi as Grace sped through the winding coastal roads toward the north cliffside of Port Lawson.
In the backseat, Lily was trembling, looking out the tinted glass at the passing streetlights.
"Mama," Lily said quietly. "Are we going home?"
"We're going to Mr. Vale's house, baby," Grace said, her hands gripping the leather steering wheel so hard her knuckles turned white. "We need to get something very important from his office."
"Will the bad men come there too?"
Grace glanced in the rearview mirror. No headlights were following them yet, but she knew it was only a matter of time. Mason Reed controlled the city's private security networks, corrupt police officers, and harbor guards. He would realize his garage team had failed within minutes.
Ten minutes later, the massive wrought-iron gates of the Vale Estate loomed out of the coastal fog.
The gates were locked down, the heavy steel bars glinting in the dark. Usually, two armed guards stood watch at the gatehouse, but tonight, the booth was dark and empty. Mason had already pulled the perimeter guards away to consolidate his takeover.
Grace reached into the glove box of the Audi. As she hoped, Adrian kept an emergency gate transmitter clipped inside his personal vehicle. She pressed the button.
The heavy iron gates groaned and swung slowly open.
Grace drove the Audi up the long, winding gravel driveway, parking beneath the canopy of the massive stone mansion. The house was pitch-black, standing like a giant silent sentinel over the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean below.
Grace unbuckled Lily, picked her up, and hurried up the front marble steps. She unlocked the heavy oak front door using her master housekeeper keycard and stepped inside.
The mansion smelled of polished mahogany, beeswax, and cold marble. It was a place Grace had spent three years cleaning every inch of, yet tonight, it felt entirely different—like an abandoned tomb waiting for its master to return.
"Stay close to me, Lily," Grace whispered, taking her daughter's small hand.
They navigated the dark corridors, heading straight for Adrian's private study on the second floor.
The study was a massive, two-story library lined with thousands of leather-bound books, a grand fireplace, and a massive mahogany desk overlooking the ocean. Behind a portrait of the Vale family lineage hung the heavy steel wall safe.
Grace swung the portrait aside, revealing the electronic keypad of the vault.
Her fingers hovered over the numbers. Lily's birthday.
October 14th. 1-0-1-4.
Grace typed the four digits into the glowing keypad.
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
A heavy mechanical click echoed through the quiet room, and the thick steel vault door popped open six inches.
Grace pulled the door back. Inside sat stacks of wrapped bundles of hundred-dollar bills, three encrypted satellite phones, a black leather-bound ledger, and a sleek, stainless-steel revolver resting beside two full speed-loaders of ammunition.
Grace reached inside and grabbed the leather ledger. She flipped it open.
Inside were handwritten pages documenting every corrupt transaction, every bribe paid to Port Lawson city officials, and every illegal contract signed by Mason Reed over the last five years. Adrian had been keeping a record of his lieutenant's corruption, waiting for the right moment to eliminate him.
Suddenly, Lily pulled on Grace’s apron.
"Mama," Lily whispered, her nose sniffing the air near the study's heavy double doors.
Grace froze, turning around. "What is it, baby?"
Lily pointed toward the dark hallway outside the study.
"It smells like sweet flowers," Lily whispered, her voice trembling. "The sweet flower water that the man in the hospital was wearing."
Grace felt her heart drop into her stomach.
Mason Reed's expensive cologne.

From the dark doorway of the study, a quiet, mocking clapping sound filled the room.
"Very impressive, Grace," Mason Reed said, stepping out of the shadows with a drawn pistol equipped with a long black silencer. "I didn't think a housemaid would figure out the safe code. But then again... I didn't realize Adrian cared so much about your little bastard."
