Chapter 7 - The Masks Fall Off

“Grant...” Vanessa stammered, her voice pitching upward into a desperate, frantic register as she took a stumbling step toward him, her hands trembling. “Grant, thank God. You... you weren't in Paris. I was so worried. And then I found—I found that bracelet in the hallway, and I was just trying to secure it—it’s a misunderstanding, I swear to God—”
“Stop talking, Vanessa,” Grant said.
The command was so quiet, so devoid of human warmth, that it hit the marble floor like a physical blow.
Marcus Reed tried to back toward the front door, his hand reaching behind his back toward the brass handle.
“Don't even think about it, Mr. Reed,” Cal said smoothly, stepping directly into his path with the effortless grace of a man who had ended dozens of worse situations before breakfast. “The state troopers are already briefed on your corporate fraud warrants out of Milwaukee. Moving toward the exit just upgrades you from a witness to a fugitive.”
Marcus stopped dead, his hands rising defensively into the air.
Grant walked slowly across the foyer until he stood directly in front of Vanessa. She looked smaller now—stripped of the designer clothes, the curated poise, and the polished lies that had anchored her in his home for a year. Without the mask, she looked hollow.
“You planted Evelyn’s jewelry in Mara’s room,” Grant said, his voice dangerously low. “You lied about the thefts. You lied about my daughters. You brought your criminal brother into my home with stolen security codes to gut my family trust.”
“Grant, listen to me,” Vanessa whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes, designed to appeal to the man she thought she could still manipulate. “They forced me—my father, my family, we were drowning in debt—they told me if I didn't secure the Whitaker assets, we would lose everything. I care about you, Grant. I really do—”
“You don't even know what care means,” Grant interrupted coldly. He turned his head slightly, signaling the state troopers. “Officer, take them both into custody for trespassing, corporate conspiracy, and grand larceny.”
The troopers moved in with swift, professional precision. Click of steel cuffs around Marcus’s wrists. Click of steel cuffs around Vanessa’s slender wrists.
As Vanessa was hauled backward toward the open front door, her porcelain mask finally shattered completely, replaced by a snarl of pure, venomous hatred.
“You arrogant, cold-hearted bastard!” she screamed, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling of the foyer as the troopers dragged her down the steps toward the squad car. “You deserve to die alone in this mausoleum! No one will ever love you, Grant! No one!”
The heavy oak door swung shut, cutting off her voice.

The foyer grew dead silent again.
Grant stood motionless for a long moment, staring at the closed door where the nightmare had finally exited his life.
