CHAPTER 2 — The Hospital Behind the Truth

Night fell over San Francisco like a heavy curtain.
Marcus drove in a black car behind a public bus, keeping distance. Elena sat inside it, unaware she was being followed.
Of course she was unaware.
People like her never expected to be watched by men like him.
The bus stopped in an older district near a public hospital. Elena stepped off quickly, almost running.
That alone caught Marcus’s attention.
He followed her inside.
The hospital smelled of disinfectant and exhaustion. The kind of place where hope came in small doses.
Marcus moved quietly through the corridors until he saw her.
Elena stood outside a glass pediatric room.
Inside was a boy.
Very small. Very pale. Connected to machines that beeped softly, as if counting down time itself.
The boy turned his head slowly.
And smiled.
“Elena…”
His voice was weak, but full of recognition.
“Mama…”
Marcus froze.
That word didn’t belong in a hospital.
Elena pressed her hand against the glass, trembling. The child mirrored her gesture.
A nurse approached her and handed her a document.
Marcus stepped closer.
His eyes caught the number immediately.
$180,000 — urgent life-saving surgery required.
Elena’s hands shook as she held the paper.
“I’m trying… I’m still trying,” she whispered. “Please… don’t take him away from me.”
The nurse’s expression softened—but remained firm.
“There is no more time left.”
Elena collapsed into a chair, covering her face.
And Marcus stood there, unseen, watching a woman break quietly in a hallway.
Something inside him shifted.
Not pity.
Not sympathy.
Something deeper.
Confusion.
Because none of this made sense.
A maid.
A dying child calling her “Mom.”
And a bill that, for Marcus, was nothing more than a signature—but for her, was the difference between life and death.
He left before anyone noticed him.

That night, he did something he hadn’t done in years.
He ordered a full background investigation.
