Chapter 7 - Total Asset Liquidation

By Tuesday morning, the dismantling of Ethan Monroe’s fabricated life was moving with the unstoppable momentum of a freight train.
Ethan had rushed straight from San Francisco International Airport to the Napa townhouse, expecting to pack a bag, beg for forgiveness, and somehow salvage his marriage. Instead, he found two county sheriff deputies and an Ashford legal team standing on the front porch, changing the smart locks on the double doors.
“What do you think you’re doing?!” Ethan shouted, sprinting up the driveway, his hair disheveled, his suit wrinkled from the red-eye flight. “This is my home! My name is on the deed!”
The lead attorney, a sharp woman named Rachel Sterling, turned around slowly, holding a clipboard.
“Your name was on a quitclaim deed drafted by a subsidiary mortgage holding company controlled by Ashford Health Systems, Mr. Monroe,” Rachel said calmly. “And as of 6:00 a.m. today, that mortgage has been called in default due to fraudulent misrepresentation of income and ongoing criminal investigations.”
Ethan grabbed the front pillars of the porch. “You can’t do this! Call Hannah! Let me talk to my wife!”
“Your wife is currently resting in a private executive suite paid for by her own family trust, while you are officially being served with an emergency petition for divorce, sole custody, and total financial restitution,” Rachel replied without blinking. She gestured to the driveway where a flatbed tow truck was hoisting his luxury BMW off the asphalt. “And by the way, your mother has been formally arraigned on charges of felony elder/maternal endangerment and battery. She won't be posting bail anytime soon.”
Ethan stared at her in utter disbelief. The ground beneath his feet felt like quicksand. Everything he had stolen, everything he had pretended to be, everything he had built on a foundation of lies and infidelity—was gone in less than seventy-two hours.

“Where is she?” Ethan snarled, his voice cracking with desperation. “Where is Hannah? She can’t do this to me! I made her!”
“Mr. Monroe,” Rachel said, turning back toward the door with a cold smile. “You didn't make Hannah Ashford. You merely forgot who she was.”
