Chapter 3 - The Contract of a Single Day

The morning sun filtered through the grand floor-to-ceiling windows of the Verrone estate, casting warm geometric light across the dark oak breakfast table.
Clara Vance stood in the corner of the vast, industrial kitchen, her fingers twisting the edge of her apron into tight knots. She hadn't slept a single second. All night, she had lay awake in her small staff room on the basement level, expecting heavy boots to come down the corridor, expecting to be handed an envelope of cash and thrown out onto the rain-slicked streets of Manhattan.
Instead, at seven o'clock sharp, Rafael Conti had knocked on her door.
"The Boss wants you and Mia in the dining room," Rafael had said, his tone neutral, carrying neither threat nor malice.
Now, Clara watched in stunned silence as Damiano Verrone sat at the head of the long mahogany dining table. He was dressed not in his usual intimidating black suit, but in a impeccably tailored navy blazer, open-collared white shirt, and dark trousers.
Beside him sat Mia, perched on two velvet cushions so she could reach the table. In front of her sat a plate stacked high with blueberry pancakes, fresh berries, and whipped cream—a breakfast prepared personally by the estate's executive chef, who looked just as bewildered as the rest of the staff.
"Eat, Mia," Damiano said softly, pushing a small glass of orange juice closer to her. "You need your strength if we are going to win the drawing contest."
Mia giggled, her mouth already smeared with maple syrup. "We're gonna win! I brought my glitter markers!"
Clara took a hesitant step forward, her voice trembling. "Mr. Verrone... please. You don't have to do this. Last night... the guests... I know you were just trying to save face or avoid a scene in front of those dangerous men. We can just tell Mia that you had urgent work. She will understand. I can't let you waste your time on us."
Damiano paused, setting his silver coffee cup onto its saucer with a delicate clink. He turned his gaze toward Clara.
For the first time, Clara truly looked into Damiano’s eyes. They were a piercing, stormy gray, surrounded by dark lashes, carrying an intensity that made her breath catch in her chest. Yet there was no cruelty in them.
"A Verrone never breaks his word, Clara," Damiano said calmly. "Least of all to a lady."
"I am not a lady, sir," Clara whispered, lowering her eyes. "I am your housekeeper. I wash your linens and scrub your floors."
"You are a mother who raised a child with more courage than half the men sitting in my grand hall last night," Damiano countered, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Sit down and eat."
Clara hesitated, but the quiet command in his voice pulled her forward. She sat nervously on the edge of the chair across from Mia, taking a small slice of toast.
"Where is St. Jude's Elementary?" Damiano asked, dabbing his mouth with a linen napkin.
"It's... it's on 84th Street," Clara replied softly. "A private parochial school. I work weekend shifts at the bakery downtown to afford her tuition."
Damiano’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. He noted the calluses on Clara’s small hands, the subtle shadow of exhaustion beneath her bright hazel eyes. She was giving every drop of her life force to shield her daughter from poverty.
"Rafael," Damiano called out.
The side door opened, and Rafael stepped in, holding an encrypted tablet. "Boss?"
"Call the board of trustees at St. Jude's," Damiano said smoothly. "Inform them that the Verrone Foundation is issuing a full endowment for Mia Vance's tuition through high school. Effective immediately."
Clara gasped, dropping her fork. "Mr. Verrone! No! I cannot accept that! That is thousands of dollars!"
"It is done," Damiano said, rising from his chair and adjusting his cuffs. "Now, if we are late for Father-Daughter Day, your daughter will never forgive me."
Ten minutes later, a sleek, bulletproof black Maybach pulled up to the front courtyard.
Mia pranced down the grand stone steps, holding Damiano’s hand with absolute pride. Clara walked half a step behind them, feeling as though she had fallen into a surreal, intoxicating dream.
As they settled into the plush leather interior of the vehicle, Rafael took the driver's seat, his eyes constantly scanning the rearview mirrors.
What Clara did not know—what Damiano kept hidden beneath his calm, composed exterior—was that the entire city was currently pulsing with danger.
Don Silvio Marchetti had called an emergency meeting of the Five Families at four o'clock that morning. The news that Damiano Verrone had let his guard down for a maid’s daughter had spread through the underworld like wildfire. Marchetti believed the king had grown soft. He believed Damiano’s heart had finally reopened, making him vulnerable to a lethal stroke.
As the Maybach glided through the streets of Manhattan toward 84th Street, two dark sedans pulled out from an alley three blocks behind them, keeping a discreet, sinister distance.
Damiano glanced at the side mirror, his sharp eyes catching the reflection of the tailing vehicles. His expression didn't change, but his hand moved casually to rest over the hidden holster beneath his navy jacket.
"Damiano?" Mia pulled at his sleeve, holding up a pink crayon. "Will you help me draw a puppy when we get to my classroom?"
May you like
Damiano looked down at the bright, smiling face of the child sitting beside him. He placed his hand gently over hers.
"I will draw whatever you want, Mia," Damiano said softly, his voice hardening with an underlying promise. "And no one will ever laugh at you again."
