Chapter 7 - The Arrest

âOfficer,â Mr. Sterling said, nodding toward Vanessa. âMy client wishes to formally press charges for the assault.â
The second officer pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt and walked toward Vanessa.
âNo! No, you canât do this!â Vanessa shrieked, backing away, clutching her neck brace. âIâm injured! I have a concussion! Brandon, do something! Do something!â
Brandon didn't move. He stood completely paralyzed, his jaw slack, as the officer gently but firmly turned Vanessa around and clicked the handcuffs over her wrists.
âVanessa Miller, you are under arrest for assault and battery on a person over the age of 65. You have the right to remain silent...â
As the officer read Vanessa her Miranda rights, Brandon sank to his knees on the hardwood floor. He buried his face in his hands, finally realizing the sheer magnitude of what they had lost.
âMr. Miller,â Mr. Sterling said, looking down at Brandon. âThe eviction notice gives you exactly one hour to pack your personal clothing and vacate the premises. If you attempt to take any furniture, art, or items purchased with trust funds, you will be arrested for theft. I suggest you start packing.â
For the next hour, I sat at the dining room table, sipping a freshly brewed cup of Earl Grey tea. I watched silently as Brandon scurried up and down the stairs, stuffing his clothes into garbage bags because he couldn't find his designer luggage.
He didn't look at me once. The shame was too heavy. Or perhaps it was just the realization that he had underestimated the woman who had spent decades protecting him, feeding him, and loving him unconditionallyâuntil he forced her to stop.
When the hour was up, the police escorted him out the front door. He carried two black trash bags over his shoulders, looking completely defeated.
Before he stepped off the porch, he turned back.
âWhere am I supposed to go, Mom? My accounts are frozen. I have nothing.â
I took a slow sip of my tea, savoring the warmth.

âI hear the state facilities are very accommodating this time of year,â I replied quietly.
I closed the heavy oak door in his face and locked the deadbolt.
