Chapter 10 - The New Dawn
An hour later, inside the sunlit conservatory, surrounded by blooming white orchids and warm sunshine, the minister stood before Dominic and Claire once again.
There were no mercenaries. No hidden wires. No secret threats lingering in the shadows.
Only Paige, Mrs. Parker, little Lily, and a small group of true loyalists standing as witnesses.
“Dominic Hale,” the minister said, his voice echoing softly through the glass room. “Do you take Claire Whitmore to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, till death do you part?”
Dominic looked down into Claire’s eyes—the eyes of the woman who had risked everything, who had stood on a blue chair in an ivory dress, leaving breadcrumbs in the dark just so he could save her.
“I do,” Dominic said, his voice deep, unwavering, and absolute.
“And do you, Claire Whitmore, take Dominic Hale to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
Claire smiled through tears of pure, unadulterated joy, squeezing his hands tightly in hers.
“I do,” she whispered.
“By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the minister announced. “You may kiss the bride.”
Dominic didn't hesitate. He pulled Claire into his arms, lifting her slightly off her feet, and kissed her deeply as the sun broke through the glass ceiling, bathing them in warm, golden light.
Lily clapped her tiny hands in delight, waving her stuffed rabbit in the air, while Paige wiped tears of happiness from her cheeks.
When they broke the kiss, Claire rested her forehead against Dominic’s, her hands holding his face, feeling the steady, unbroken strength of the man who had become her fortress.
