Chapter 5 - Cornered Rattlesnakes

Downstairs in the grand ballroom, the atmosphere had deteriorated into tense confusion. The elite of Chicago high society were whispering behind silk scarves and crystal glasses. Margaret Westwood was pacing near the fireplace, trying desperately to assure a US Senator that everything was under control.
Madison Cole stood near the archway, her knuckles white as she gripped her designer handbag. Her heart was hammering against her ribs. She kept glancing toward the grand staircase, waiting for Caleb to give her the signal.
Then she heard the heavy footsteps.
Adrian emerged at the top of the stairs. He was dragging Caleb by the arm. Behind them came Natalie, holding the red Cartier box, followed by Rachel, who was carrying Emma in her arms.
The music stopped. The chatter died instantly.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Adrian’s voice echoed across the massive hall, deep and commanding. Every eye swung toward him.
Margaret turned pale. “Adrian! What is the meaning of this spectacle?”
Adrian reached the foot of the stairs and threw Caleb forward onto the polished floor. Caleb landed on his hands and knees in front of three hundred horrified guests.
“Call the police,” Adrian told the head of estate security standing by the door.
“Adrian, stop!” Madison stepped forward, her voice high and panicked. “He’s sick! Adrian has been having psychological episodes over Claire for months! He’s forcing Caleb to say things—”
“Three years ago,” Adrian interrupted, stepping down to face Madison directly, “my wife Claire died on the Lake Forest turnpike. The cause was recorded as mechanical failure leading to a loss of control.”
He reached out and pulled the red Cartier box from Natalie’s hand, holding it up for the room to see.
“Tonight, thanks to Rachel Bennett and her daughter Emma, I found Claire’s lost wedding ring. Locked inside the secret compartment of my wife’s closet—a compartment only three people knew existed.”
Madison took a step back, but two security guards closed in behind her, blocking the exit.
“Inside that box,” Adrian continued, staring into Madison’s terrifyingly pale face, “was a voice recording made by Claire forty-five minutes before her death. Identifying Madison Cole and Caleb Westwood for financial fraud... and naming Madison Cole as the person who ordered her brake lines severed.”
A collective gasp ripped through the ballroom. Guests shrank back from Madison as if she were carrying a plague.
“That’s a lie!” Madison shrieked, her pristine facade cracking completely. “That recording is a fake! You manufactured it! You’ve been unhinged since she died!”
“Caleb already confessed, Madison,” Adrian said softly.
Madison shot her head toward Caleb, who was sobbing on the floor. “You coward!” she screamed at him. “You pathetic, weak coward! You were the one who took the money! You came to me begging for help!”
“Silence!” Margaret shouted, stepping forward, her hands shaking violently as the reality of her world crumbling set in. She looked at Caleb, then at Madison, horror dawning in her eyes. “Caleb... tell me it isn't true. Tell me you didn't...”

Caleb couldn't look his mother in the eye. He just buried his face in his hands.
Outside, the faint, wailing sirens of Chicago Police Department cruisers began to echo through the long iron gates of the Westwood estate.
