Chapter 8 - The Open Door

The afternoon bell rang through the halls of Hartwell Middle School, signaling the end of the school day.

Laughter and the scuffling of sneakers echoed down the corridors as twenty-six sixth graders packed up their backpacks, chattering excitedly about the upcoming weekend and the spring science fair.

Claire stood by the classroom door, watching them file out one by one.

“Have a great weekend, Mrs. Bennett!” a girl shouted, waving as she skipped down the hall.

“See you Monday!”

Eli was the last one to leave. He paused at the doorway, looking up at the metal door frame where the scratch marks from the emergency bar were still faintly visible beneath a fresh coat of white enamel paint.

He reached out, touching the cold metal of the handle with his fingertips.

Claire walked over, standing beside him in the doorway. She didn't say anything, but she placed a warm, steady hand on his shoulder.

“You don't have to keep checking the doors, Eli,” she said softly. “The locks only work from the inside now.”

Eli looked up at her, a flicker of understanding passing through his dark eyes. He nodded slowly, dropping his hand to his side.

“I know,” he said.

He adjusted the strap of his backpack, turned down the brightly lit hallway, and joined the rest of the students heading toward the main courtyard exit.

Claire watched him go until he disappeared around the corner.

She turned back into her classroom. The room was quiet, filled with the warm, golden light of the afternoon sun filtering through clean, sparkling windows.

She walked over to her desk, picked up her red grading pen, and closed her appointment book.

Outside, in the courtyard, a group of robins chirped loudly in the budding branches of an oak tree. The wind rustled the leaves, carrying the clean, sweet scent of spring rain and new beginnings.

Claire placed both hands on her stomach, feeling the steady, rhythmic heartbeat of her daughter waiting just beneath her ribs.

She looked toward the open classroom door, knowing that no matter what storms lay ahead, every door from this day forward would remain wide open to the light.
