A year later, the estate had transformed completely.

Margaret was currently serving her sentence in a maximum-security federal correctional facility several states away, where her grand social pedigree meant nothing, and her arrogant demands were met with the cold reality of prison life. None of her former high-society friends ever visited her; they had scrubbed her name from their address books the moment the headlines broke.
On a warm Saturday afternoon in May, I sat on the wide wooden porch of our home, sipping a cup of herbal tea while watching Ethan chase our golden retriever puppy across the emerald-green lawn.
