Chapter 6 - The Fallout

The aftermath of the park incident was immediate. A restraining order was served, but it felt like a flimsy piece of paper against the storm that Sarah was unleashing.

The media circus began. Because Sarah had contacts in the local press, stories began to leak about my "unstable behavior." My employer, citing the "distraction" and the "potential for liability," placed me on indefinite leave. My reputation, built over fifteen years of hard work, was being dismantled in a news cycle.

The social workers were caught in the middle. Sarah had hired a private investigator to follow me, hoping to catch me in a single slip-up. She wanted to prove I was unfit.

Maya began to withdraw into herself. She stopped drawing entirely. She sat in the corner of her room, staring at the wall, her small body curled into a ball. The trauma had shifted from physical to deeply psychological. She felt responsible for the chaos, as if her spilled juice had been the original sin that shattered the world.

"It’s my fault," she whispered one night, her voice hauntingly hollow. "If I hadn't spilled it, Mom wouldn't be mad, and we’d be home."

I sat with her, tears finally breaking through my stoic facade. I held her, rocking her back and forth, trying to shield her from the reverberations of our crumbling life.

"Maya, listen to me," I said, my voice choked. "The world is full of broken things. Sometimes, things break so we can build them better. You didn't break the world. You just pointed out where the cracks were."

But the isolation was brutal. Friends I’d known for years stopped calling, terrified of being dragged into the mess. The legal fees were mounting, and my savings were dwindling. I was fighting a monster that knew how to wear the face of a saint, and I was losing the ground beneath my feet.
