Chapter 6 - A TRUE HOME AT LAST

Later that evening, after the guests had gone, the lanterns in the backyard were still glowing softly against the deepening twilight.

The air was cool, smelling of woodsmoke and autumn leaves.

Alowyn and Crispin were tucked safely into their beds upstairs, sleeping the deep, untroubled sleep of children who knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were cherished, protected, and unconditionally loved.

I sat at the kitchen island, opening the small wooden music box my father had given me earlier in the day.

I wound the tiny brass key beneath the base.

A soft, clear, beautiful melody filled the quiet kitchen—the exact same lullaby my grandmother Dorothea used to hum to me when I was a little girl sitting on her front porch.

I closed my eyes, listening to the gentle notes echoing through the room, and thought of Dorothea’s parting words: “Patience is not the same as surrender, Corinthia.”

She had known. Even then, she had known that protecting my children wouldn't require shouting matches or bitter retaliation. It would require quiet observation, unyielding courage, and the unwavering patience to build a foundation so solid that no amount of favoritism or arrogance could ever shake it.

I opened my laptop one last time.

I clicked on the folder labeled Evidence—the digital archive that had captured every painful moment, every slight, and every tear over the past three years.

With a steady hand, I selected the entire folder, right-clicked, and selected Move to Trash.

We didn't need the evidence anymore. We didn't need to look backward to prove our worth or measure our value by someone else’s broken standards.

The past was behind us. The future was wide open, bright, and entirely our own.

I emptied the trash bin, closed the laptop screen, and walked down the hallway to check on my children.

As I stood in the doorway of their bedroom, watching Alowyn’s peaceful breathing and Crispin’s quiet, relaxed smile, I knew that whatever storms came our way in the years ahead, we would face them together.

We had found our way out of the shadows.

And we were finally, truly home.
