Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM AMBUSH

Forty-eight hours later, St. Catherine’s Academy received a legal earthquake.

A team of federal marshals and court bailiffs walked through the front doors of the prestigious academy during morning assembly, serving emergency injunctions to Principal Martha Collins, Miss Patricia, and every sitting member of the school board.

The news broke across local Austin media by evening news hour.

“BREAKING: Elite Austin private school faces multi-million dollar lawsuit and federal child abuse investigation following leaked surveillance footage…”

Javier sat in his living room, watching the local news broadcast on television while Lucy played quietly on the rug with her stuffed bunny. The screen showed footage of reporters swarming the front gates of St. Catherine’s, shoving microphones toward a pale, panic-stricken Martha Collins as she tried to scurry into her BMW without answering questions.

Miss Patricia had already been placed on immediate administrative leave, though her lawyer had released a pathetic statement claiming the video was “out of context” and “heavily edited by a disgruntled former employee.”

Right on cue, Javier’s phone began to ring incessantly.

He looked down at the screen. It was Sarah, one of the mothers from the parent WhatsApp group who had sent him that vicious text message days ago.

Javier let it ring to voicemail.

Then it rang again. And again.

Within ten minutes, his phone was flooded with text messages from the very same people who had shunned him and turned Lucy into the villain of their cozy little community.

“Javier, oh my god… I just saw the news. Is it true? We had no idea…”

“Please call me back. My son was in Miss Patricia’s class last year. I need to know if she touched him too…”

“We are holding a parent meeting tonight to demand Martha Collins’ resignation. We want to support you and Lucy!”

Javier stared at the screens glowing with hypocritical remorse. He didn’t feel vindicated. He felt hollow. Where was their support when Lucy was crying in her bed? Where was their outrage when the school issued that poison press release calling his six-year-old daughter “emotionally sensitive”?

He deleted the messages without reading them, blocking each number one by one.

The doorbell rang.

Javier stood up cautiously, walking to the front door. He peered through the peephole.

Standing on his porch was not a reporter, nor a remorseful parent. It was Arthur Sterling—no, wait, it was someone else. It was Robert Vance, the president of the St. Catherine’s Academy Board of Directors and a senior partner at an Austin investment bank.

Robert looked exhausted. His expensive tie was loosened, his hair disheveled, and his expression carried the unmistakable weight of a man whose empire was burning down around him.

Javier opened the door just a few inches, keeping the security chain securely locked.

“Mr. Morales,” Robert said, his voice stripped of all corporate arrogance, sounding tired and desperate. “May I please come in? For five minutes?”

“You have thirty seconds before I call Marcus Vance and have you removed for harassment,” Javier said coldly.

Robert swallowed hard, holding up both hands in a gesture of absolute surrender.

“I’m not here to fight you, Javier,” Robert said quietly. “I’m here to negotiate. The board met an hour ago. We reviewed the unedited footage Marcus sent over. We… we didn't know the extent of what Martha and Patricia were doing. Well, some of the executives suspected it, but—”

“You covered it up,” Javier interrupted, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. “You protected your budget while my daughter had bruises on her arms and nightmares in her bed.”

“We are prepared to issue a full, unreserved public apology,” Robert rushed to say, stepping closer to the door. “We will strip Miss Patricia of her credentials permanently. Martha Collins has been terminated with cause, effective immediately. And the board is prepared to establish a permanent trust fund for Lucy’s education, alongside a financial settlement of two million dollars, provided that…”

Robert hesitated.

“Provided what?” Javier asked, narrowing his eyes.

“Provided we settle this out of court, seal the proceedings, and issue a joint statement that the matter has been amicably resolved without admitting institutional liability,” Robert finished, holding his breath.

Javier stared at the man representing the very system that had tried to crush his little girl. They thought money could buy silence. They thought a signed NDA and a fat check could erase the terror in Lucy’s eyes.

Javier reached out, grabbed the security chain, and unhooked it. He swung the front door wide open, stepping out onto the porch so Robert had to look straight up into his eyes.

“Take your settlement, Robert,” Javier said softly, leaning in close. “Take your money, your sealed files, and your corporate reputation.”

Robert blinked, a glimmer of hope crossing his face. “So… you accept?”

“No,” Javier whispered, his voice like cold steel. “I’ll see you in federal court. Every single board member who signed off on the cover-up is going to take the stand under oath. And when I’m finished with St. Catherine’s Academy, there won’t be enough bricks left to pave a parking lot.”

Robert staggered backward, the color entirely draining from his face.

May you like

“You’re out of your mind,” Robert stammered. “You’ll be fighting us for years. We have unlimited legal funds.”

“So do I,” Javier replied calmly, remembering the silent backing of his own network and Marcus Vance’s bulldog team. “And unlike you, I have nothing left to lose.”
