CHAPTER 2: THE PLAN SETS INTO MOTION

I didn't sleep that night.

Not even for a minute.

I lay motionless beneath the blankets, eyes closed whenever anyone entered the room, listening to every footstep, every whisper, every sound beyond the door.

Fear kept me awake.

But anger kept me focused.

Around midnight, Daniel and Rachel finally left.

I heard them say goodnight to the nurses.

He even kissed my forehead before leaving.

The performance was so convincing it made me sick.

"Get some rest, sweetheart," he whispered.

As if he hadn't just discussed inheriting my fortune.

As if he hadn't helped put me in this hospital.

The moment they were gone, I opened my eyes.

The room was dark except for the city lights beyond the windows.

My phone vibrated.

One message.

From my attorney, Michael Bennett.

Emergency protocol activated. Call when safe.

I immediately dialed his private number.

He answered before the first ring finished.

"Emily?"

His voice was calm, but I could hear the concern underneath.

"I'm alive."

A long silence followed.

Then:

"Thank God."

I swallowed hard.

"You believed me?"

"I've worked with you for fifteen years," Michael replied. "If you send those three words, I assume your life is in danger."

My eyes burned.

For the first time all night, someone was on my side.

Quickly, I explained everything.

The dinner.

The collapse.

The voices.

The conversation.

The inheritance.

The suspected poisoning.

Michael listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he exhaled slowly.

"I was afraid of something like this."

"What do you mean?"

Another pause.

"Three weeks ago Daniel requested copies of several trust documents."

A chill ran through me.

"He said he was planning future tax restructuring."

"He lied."

"I know that now."

Michael's voice hardened.

"That's why I created duplicate protections."

I sat upright.

"What protections?"

A faint smile entered his voice.

"The ones Daniel never knew existed."

For the first time that night, I smiled too.

Maybe my husband wasn't as smart as he thought.

The next morning began with chaos.

At exactly 8:03 AM.

My phone exploded with notifications.

Dozens.

Emails.

Bank alerts.

Legal confirmations.

Michael had moved fast.

Very fast.

Every business account requiring dual authorization had been frozen.

Control of multiple trusts had shifted into protective review.

Ownership transfers were suspended pending investigation.

Most importantly...

Daniel's access to company funds had vanished.

Completely.

I almost laughed.

The timing couldn't have been more perfect.

Because ten minutes later, Daniel arrived.

And he was smiling.

He walked into the room carrying flowers.

White roses.

My favorite.

Or at least they used to be.

"Good morning, beautiful."

I pretended to be weak.

Confused.

Vulnerable.

His expression softened.

The loving husband act.

Academy Award worthy.

"How are you feeling?" he asked.

"Better."

He squeezed my hand.

"Thank God."

Liar.

I watched him carefully.

Waiting.

It happened sooner than expected.

His phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

Annoyance flashed across his face.

Then concern.

He stepped toward the window and answered.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then his posture changed completely.

"What do you mean frozen?"

My heartbeat quickened.

Good.

Very good.

"That's impossible."

Pause.

"Who authorized that?"

Longer pause.

His face turned pale.

I had never seen Daniel pale before.

The color drained from him so quickly it was almost comical.

"No," he said sharply. "No, there must be some mistake."

Another pause.

Then:

"Michael did WHAT?"

I nearly smiled.

Daniel ended the call.

Immediately another one came.

Then another.

Then another.

Each conversation made him look worse.

By the fourth call, sweat had formed along his forehead.

By the fifth, he looked ready to punch a wall.

Finally, he shoved the phone into his pocket.

I spoke softly.

"Everything okay?"

His head snapped toward me.

For a moment, genuine panic crossed his face.

Then he forced a smile.

"Business issues."

"Serious?"

"No."

Lie.

A terrible lie.

I could practically hear his world collapsing.

The best part?

He still thought I knew nothing.

An hour later Rachel arrived.

The second she entered the room, she knew something was wrong.

One look at Daniel's face told her.

They exchanged a glance.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

Rachel pulled him into the hallway.

Unfortunately for them...

the hospital door was still slightly open.

I heard everything.

"What happened?" she whispered.

Daniel looked furious.

"Something's wrong."

"Wrong how?"

"The accounts."

Rachel froze.

"What accounts?"

"ALL OF THEM."

Silence.

Then:

"That's impossible."

"I KNOW."

Panic entered his voice.

"The trusts are locked."

"The companies are under review."

"The transfers have been suspended."

Rachel's breathing quickened.

"What about the inheritance?"

Daniel looked like he wanted to scream.

"There won't be anything left to inherit if this isn't fixed."

For the first time, I heard fear in Rachel's voice.

Real fear.

"What do we do?"

Daniel lowered his voice.

But not enough.

"We finish this."

My blood turned cold.

Rachel stared at him.

"You mean—"

"Yes."

"No delays."

"No mistakes."

"Tonight."

The hallway fell silent.

And suddenly I understood something terrifying.

The failed inheritance wasn't stopping them.

It was accelerating them.

They still intended to kill me.

And now they were desperate.

Desperate people make mistakes.

But they also become dangerous.

Very dangerous.

That afternoon, Michael arrived in person.

Not alone.

With him was a man in a dark suit.

Mid-fifties.

Sharp eyes.

Detective's posture.

The moment Daniel saw them enter, his confidence cracked.

Michael smiled politely.

"Emily."

I nodded.

The detective introduced himself.

"Detective Harris."

Then he looked directly at Daniel.

And said something that made the entire room freeze.

"Mr. Carter, we'd like to ask you a few questions regarding a possible poisoning investigation."

The silence that followed felt endless.

Rachel nearly dropped her purse.

Daniel's face turned white.

And for the first time since I woke up in that hospital bed...

I saw fear.

Not my fear.

His.

Because the game was changing.

May you like

And he was no longer the one in control.
