Chapter 5: The Gathering of the Wolves

I spent the next forty-eight hours compiling the file. I didn't call the police immediately, nor did I submit the video to CPS yet. I knew how the legal system worked—it could be slow, bureaucratic, and prone to plea deals. Amanda had money, and her husband, Robert, was a corporate lawyer who knew how to smooth things over with judges. If I wanted absolute justice, I couldn't just rely on the courts. I had to destroy her social, financial, and legal standing simultaneously.
On Friday evening, the annual Miller Family Foundation dinner was scheduled to take place at a private banquet hall in downtown Chicago. It was a formal event funded by David and Amanda’s wealthy grandparents, attended by over fifty members of the extended family, local business owners, and board members of several prominent charities Amanda desperately wanted to join.
Amanda had been planning this dinner for six months. She was slated to receive an award for her "outstanding philanthropic work with children’s arts programs."
At 6:30 PM, David and I arrived. David looked sick to his stomach, wearing a dark suit that felt too big for him. I wore a tailored, sharp black dress. My hair was pulled back, my expression calm. Lily was safe at home with my mother, watching movies and eating ice cream.
When we entered the ballroom, the crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant light over the tables. Amanda was in the center of the room, wearing a glittering emerald-green gown, holding a glass of champagne, laughing loudly with a group of local journalists.
When she spotted us, her laughter faltered for a fraction of a second. She patted her hair, said something to her companions, and walked over to us with an airy, confident stride.
“David! Sarah!” she said, her voice loud enough for the nearby tables to hear. “I’m so glad you made it. I was worried you’d stay home because of Lily’s little… tantrum earlier this week. How is the sweet girl? Did you manage to fix that terrible gum accident?”
Several relatives turned to look at us, murmuring softly. Amanda was trying to set the narrative before I could even speak. She wanted everyone to think I was the unhinged, dramatic sister-in-law.
“Lily is doing wonderful, Amanda,” I said, my voice smooth, loud, and perfectly clear. “In fact, she has a special presentation for the entire family tonight. To celebrate your award.”
Amanda’s eyes narrowed slightly, a tremor of suspicion passing through her gaze. “A presentation? This is a strict schedule, Sarah. We don't have time for—”
“Oh, I think the board will find the time,” I interrupted, turning my head toward the large projection screen at the front of the stage, which was currently displaying a slideshow of Amanda's charity work.
I reached into my small evening clutch and pulled out a small, black wireless presentation clicker. I didn't wait for her permission. I bypassed the audio-visual booth entirely; I had already paid the college kid running the tech desk five hundred dollars an hour ago to swap the presentation source code to my encrypted wireless network drive.
I pressed the button.
The slideshow of Amanda smiling with orphans vanished. The screen blinked black for two seconds.
Then, the audio exploded through the ballroom’s high-fidelity surround-sound speakers.
“Chloe, hold her hands down so she won’t wiggle and make a mess!” Amanda’s recorded voice boomed through the hall, echoing off the high ceilings.
The entire ballroom went dead silent. Glasses stopped clinking. People froze mid-bite.

On the massive twenty-foot screen, the 4K video of Amanda’s sunroom began to play. The entire extended family watched in horrific clarity as six-year-old Lily was pinned down by an eight-year-old Chloe. They watched the large black scissors hack away at the beautiful brown braid. They saw the violent jerk, the sudden spurt of blood from Lily’s ear, and they heard Lily’s heartbreaking, high-pitched scream for her mother.
And then, the screen shifted. It showed the live-stream comments, the paid subscription receipts, and the text messages Amanda had sent me lying about the bubblegum. Finally, it showed the official pediatric forensic report from Dr. Evans, complete with the clinical stamps and the word ASSAULT / CHILD ABUSE highlighted in bold red text.
