Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The tension broke when Elena herself walked through the front gate, not as an invader, but as a visitor. She was elegant, cold, and entirely unafraid. She arrived in a black town car, accompanied by a small retinue of bodyguards who were just as well-armed as Raphael's. Raphael met her in the foyer, the air thick with the history of blood and betrayal.

"Raphael, dear," she purred, her eyes scanning the room, landing on the armed men with a look of bored superiority. "I heard Matthew was unwell. I came to see if I could help. After all, he is family, isn't he?"

"You came to finish the job," Raphael said, his hand resting on the holster at his hip. "You thought you could slip a death trap onto a helpless infant and walk away clean. You made a mistake, Elena. You underestimated who I would turn to for help."

I watched from the top of the stairs, clutching Matthew. Elena didn't flinch. She had her own guards, a small, disciplined unit that looked better trained than Raphael’s own. The house was split—a civil war brewing in the marble halls, and I was caught right in the middle. I knew that if I didn't act, the house would become a graveyard. I took Matthew to the safe room—a place I had discovered while mapping the mansion’s architecture—and activated the exterior alarm, which I had surreptitiously re-routed to the city police’s emergency line. I didn't want the mob to handle this; I wanted the law to intervene before more blood was spilled.

The sound of sirens approaching the estate shocked everyone. The internal conflict ceased as the reality of external intervention dawned on them. Raphael looked up, locking eyes with me, realizing what I had done. He didn't look angry; he looked relieved. He knew that the only way to save his son was to burn his own empire down. The sirens grew louder, a cacophony of justice that promised to shatter the silence of the mansion once and for all. I held Matthew close, whispered a promise of protection, and waited for the doors to burst open.
