Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Eleanor

While Evelyn stepped into her true throne atop the corporate world, the descent of the Lawson family was swift, brutal, and entirely merciless.
By Tuesday afternoon, the penthouse lease had been officially terminated by the landlord under Vance Global’s commercial real estate provisions. Without warning, building management arrived with two security guards, tossing Garrett and Eleanor’s remaining personal belongings into black plastic trash bags on the wet San Francisco sidewalk.
Eleanor stood in the pouring rain, clutching her designer handbag—now scuffed and ruined—shrieking hysterically at the passing pedestrians.
"Do you know who I am?! My son is a tech billionaire! You can't treat us like this! Call the police!" she screamed, her voice cracking into a ragged rasp as water streamed down her face, washing away her expensive makeup in dark, muddy streaks.
Passersby merely glanced at her with cold indifference, stepping around the plastic trash bags as if they were piles of garbage. In a city like San Francisco, where fortunes were made and lost overnight, nobody had time to pity fallen snobs.
Garrett sat on an overturned plastic milk crate beside the bags, staring blankly at the wet pavement. He wore the same tuxedo shirt from the christening party, now stained, wrinkled, and smelling faintly of stale champagne and sweat.
His phone buzzed in his pocket.
With trembling fingers, he pulled it out. It wasn’t Evelyn. It was a text message from his former Chief Technology Officer at NexusSphere:
Garrett, the engineering team has jumped ship. Vance Global just offered all of us senior positions at their core R&D division with a fifty percent salary bump and full equity matching. Sorry, man. Business is business.
Garrett let out a hollow, broken laugh that sounded more like a sob. He dropped the phone onto the wet pavement, watching the screen shatter against the concrete.
His mother turned on him, her face twisted in absolute fury, her aristocratic mask completely shattered.
"This is all your fault!" Eleanor shrieked, grabbing the lapel of his ruined tuxedo shirt and shaking him violently. "If you hadn't been so arrogant! If you hadn't humiliated that old woman in front of everyone! We had it all! We had the penthouse, the investors, the society status! And you threw it all away because you couldn't control your pathetic temper!"

"Shut up, Mom! Just shut up!" Garrett roared, shoving her hands away with a sudden, vicious surge of frustration.
Eleanor stumbled backward, tripping over a plastic trash bag and landing hard on her hands and knees in the dirty gutter water. She sat there in the rain, staring up at her son with pure, unadulterated hatred, realizing too late that the monster she had raised had finally consumed them both.
