CHAPTER TWO: Secrets Behind Closed Doors

The ambulance raced through the rain-soaked streets of Washington, D.C.
Its sirens cut through the late-night traffic as paramedics worked around Emma Lawson.
"Blood pressure is dropping."
"One hundred over sixty... now ninety-four."
"Keep oxygen on her."
Emma struggled to keep her eyes open.
Everything around her blurred into flashes of white lights and hurried voices.
One hand instinctively rested over her stomach.
"My baby..."
A paramedic leaned closer.
"We're monitoring him."
"Stay with us, Emma."
She nodded weakly.
"I can't..."
"You can."
"We're almost there."
At Georgetown University Hospital, a trauma team waited outside the emergency entrance.
Dr. Sarah Whitmore, the attending trauma surgeon, stood beside Dr. Ethan Brooks, an obstetric specialist.
As the ambulance doors opened, the paramedics quickly delivered their report.
"Thirty-one-year-old female."
"Eight months pregnant."
"Elevator incident."
"Possible abdominal trauma."
"Fetal heart rate declining."
Sarah looked at Emma.
"I'm Dr. Whitmore."
"We're going to take care of both of you."
Emma reached for her wrist.
"Please..."
Sarah squeezed her hand gently.
"I know."
"We're doing everything we can."
Within minutes, Emma was rushed into the operating suite.
Outside, doctors moved with calm precision.
Inside, every second mattered.
The fetal monitor echoed through the room.
Beep... beep... beep...
The baby's heartbeat was still there.
But slower.
Dr. Brooks looked at the monitor.
"We need to deliver now."
Sarah nodded.
"Let's begin."
Back at the Federal Justice Building, yellow evidence tape surrounded the elevator lobby.
Federal agents photographed every corner.
Police officers interviewed employees who had remained inside after business hours.
Officer Daniel Reyes hadn't left.
He stood quietly beside Elevator Three, replaying the night's events in his mind.
Something didn't feel right.
Elevators malfunctioned.
Power outages happened.
But the emergency communication system...
That was different.
It had failed completely.
A technician approached carrying a tablet.
"Officer Reyes?"
"What did you find?"
"The emergency call button inside the elevator wasn't broken."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"It had been disconnected."
"When?"
The technician looked up.
"Sometime before tonight."
Daniel stared at the open elevator doors.
Someone hadn't simply ignored maintenance.
Someone had deliberately disabled the emergency system.
Across the lobby, FBI Special Agent Rebecca Collins arrived.
She introduced herself with a firm handshake.
"Officer Reyes."
"I understand you were first on the scene."
"I was."
Rebecca glanced toward the elevator.
"Walk me through everything."
Daniel carefully described what he had seen.
Then he mentioned the second victim.
"The blonde woman."
Rebecca nodded.
"Claire Bennett."
Daniel looked surprised.
"You know her?"
Rebecca's expression grew serious.
"We've been looking for her."
Claire Bennett remained unconscious in another hospital across the city.
Doctors expected her to recover.
But until she woke, she couldn't answer the most important question.
What had happened inside the building?
Meanwhile, Michael Grant sat alone inside an FBI interview room.
A cup of untouched coffee rested in front of him.
Agent Collins entered carrying a file.
"Mr. Grant."
"I appreciate your cooperation."
Michael nodded.
"I've already told the officers everything."
"I know."
"But I'd like to hear it myself."
Rebecca opened her notebook.
"Why were you in the Federal Justice Building after business hours?"
Michael leaned back.
"I had a scheduled meeting."
"With whom?"
"I can't answer that."
Rebecca looked at him carefully.
"You understand this is now a federal investigation."
"I do."
"And I still can't answer."
She studied him for several seconds.
Finally she changed direction.
"How did you find Claire Bennett?"
"I heard someone calling for help."
"Where?"
"Eleventh floor."
"What happened then?"
Michael sighed.
"When I reached her..."
"...she was already unconscious."
"I carried her to the nearest elevator."
"You never saw Emma Lawson?"
He shook his head.
"No."
"The first time I saw her was downstairs."
Rebecca closed her notebook.
Either Michael was telling the truth...
Or he was very good at lying.
Several hours later...
Dr. Whitmore stepped into the hospital waiting room.
Officer Reyes immediately stood.
"How is she?"
Sarah smiled with cautious relief.
"Emma is stable."
Daniel exhaled.
"And the baby?"
"The delivery was successful."
Daniel smiled.
"So he's alive?"
Sarah nodded.
"He was born prematurely."
"He'll spend some time in the neonatal intensive care unit."
"But he's fighting."
Daniel looked toward the NICU windows.
"So is his mother."
Early the next morning, Emma slowly regained consciousness.
The room was quiet.
Soft morning light filtered through the blinds.
She instinctively reached for her stomach.
It was flat.
Panic filled her face.
Dr. Brooks immediately stepped beside her bed.
"Emma."
"Your son is alive."
Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Can I see him?"
"He needs a little more time."
"He's very small."
"But he's stable."
Emma closed her eyes with relief.
"Thank you."
Just then, a nurse entered carrying a small clear envelope.
"We found this in your jacket."
Inside was a secure flash drive attached to a keychain.
Emma stared at it.
Her breathing changed.
She remembered.
The meeting.
The files.
The evidence.
She looked directly at Dr. Brooks.
"I need to speak with the FBI."
"As soon as possible."
At the Federal Justice Building, forensic investigators made another discovery.
The building's security cameras had all stopped recording at exactly 9:17 p.m.
Every camera.
Every hallway.
Every elevator.
For precisely twelve minutes.
When the recordings resumed...
Emma was already lying injured inside Elevator Three.
Agent Collins looked at the timeline in silence.
"This wasn't an accident."
Officer Reyes nodded.
"What do you think they were trying to hide?"
Rebecca looked toward the disabled elevator.
"I don't think they were trying to hide something."
She paused.
"I think they were trying to stop someone."
Somewhere inside the hospital, Emma closed her hand around the flash drive.
May you like
Whoever had wanted it...
Still didn't know she had survived.
